Job Summary

The position is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher by performing tasks assigned and directed by the teacher. (The tasks must not infringe upon the responsibilities reserved for the certified teacher; it is vital that both the teacher and the instructional assistant fully understand the limitations and purpose of the assistant.)

Essential Duties

In order to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. Assists with the organization and preparation of the classroom and instructional materials; gathers resources and related supplies.

Instructs small groups of students in various subject areas under the teacher's supervision.

Provides guidance and encourages the development of literacy and social skills.

Monitors students and provides classroom coverage when the teacher is away.

Performs administrative duties such as making copies, recording attendance, grading papers, and other related tasks.

Provides supervision during recreation, special events, field trips, and other activities as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

ParaPro Certification.

Previous experience working with students preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates basic reading, writing, and computation skills. Have good physical and emotional health.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The individual must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak clearly in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; lift up to 25 pounds; and bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
