Job Description

To provide flexible support in both the classroom and kitchen settings at Bennington County Head Start. This position fills in for absent staff, either as a Teacher Assistant in classrooms or as a Kitchen Assistant supporting food preparation and delivery. The role ensures smooth daily operations and promotes a safe, developmentally appropriate, and healthy environment for children and staff.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1.0 EDUCATION The Substitute Teacher Assistant works with the Head Teacher, Teacher Assistant, and Co-Teacher providing classroom instruction and activities. They follow the daily activity plan and prepare educational materials and special projects. They help with self-care routines, small and large group activities, supervise children at all times by sight, sound, and the ability to intervene at a moment's notice. The Substitute Teacher Assistant will read the sub folder in each classroom to ensure the classroom routine and safety protocols are followed. 2.0 CLASSROOM
MAINTENANCE
Will maintain educational supplies and art materials, monitor equipment, and cooperate with the Teacher/Teacher Assistant/Co-Teacher to maintain an orderly classroom environment. This includes assisting children at mealtime and activity time. 4.0 MEAL
PREPERATION
Assists with meal-related tasks for program events, family gatherings, workshops, meetings, and other assigned activities. Duties may include picking up groceries, as well as handling food preparation tasks such as chopping, cooking, and serving meals. 5.0 HEALTH/SAFETY
AND SANITATION
Cleans up after each meal, including dishes, meal prep areas, and carts. Maintains the cleanliness of all kitchens and kitchen appliances, complying with federal and state standards of safety and sanitation. Rotates inventory and monitors expiration dates. In addition to the above, performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent. CDA, AA, or above in Early Childhood Education and experience with children aged zero to five preferred.
