Job Description

Position Summary:
The Student - Peer Writing Tutor works with students individually or in groups to help them understand and apply course concepts. They encourage students to become independent learners by promoting study and learning strategies aimed at academic progress. Peer writing tutors function as academic role models who support students as they adapt to the demands of college life. They foster a sense of community among students at Cochise College and work cooperatively with other staff members to provide educational activities.

Cochise College requires a post offer, pre-employment background screening of all employees.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position: Tutors' students both in person and online, offering productive feedback on writing assignments Guides students throughout the writing process, offering assistance for both essays and research papers Helps students review assignment directions and use classroom materials Helps students with grammar, usage, punctuation and with MLA and APA formatting Assists with workshop development and presentations and in the creation of tutoring resources Collaborates with tutoring center staff and participates in trainings and orientations Attends training sessions held for student staff Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
General Expectations :
Employees are expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, employees must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of "B" or higher and enrolled in ENG 102 Completion of ENG 102 or an intensive writing course preferred. Students attending Cochise College on an F-1 Visa require full-time enrollment with a minimum of 12 credits per semester and six credits in the summer
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures Knowledge of current technologies and Microsoft applications Knowledge of the proper operation of and the ability to use personal computers Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office, classroom or lab setting with appropriate climate controls.
Physical Requirements:
Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met
Mental Application:
Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important Reports to : Writing Lab Supervisor
