South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

Job Summary

Provides writing support toto individual students and small groups of students. Share study and learning strategies to

promote independent learning in areas of English grammar, mechanics, content, organization,

brainstorming, critical thinking, analysis, MLA/APA Style documentation, research, formatting and many

other writing-related skills. Works collaboratively with other tutors and communicates regularly with the

Learning Center staff. Participates in training workshops before and during the semester to obtain College

Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned a grade of A or B in the subject course(s) they will tutor or have equivalent knowledge and experience.

Must demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds, ages, and skill levels.

Must be patient, supportive, and committed to helping students succeed.

Must complete CRLA Level 1 Tutor Training within one semester of hire.

Desired Qualifications

Experience tutoring or teaching in areas such as Mathematics, Science, English, Accounting, Business Statistics, and/or Computer Information Systems.

Successful completion of relevant coursework with a B average or higher, including but not limited to MAT221, BIO201, CHM152, CHM235, PHY121, PHY131, ENG101, ENG102, ACC212, CIS105, PSY230, and/or GBS221.

Formal education or training in linguistics, TESOL, rhetoric and composition, English education, literature, or creative writing.

Experience providing writing instruction, tutoring, or academic support, including work with diverse ESL student populations.

Experience providing customer service or student support services.
