Type:
full-time
Job Description:
Abacus Math Mastery Coach Children get excited about math when they feel confident. Not when they memorize the right formula. Not when they score well on a test. When they feel it. When something clicks and they realize they can do this. That is the moment everything changes. We have watched it happen in our studios. A child who was stuck becomes a child who is moving. A child who needed prompting becomes a child who is working independently, taking initiative, trying to beat their own last score. That shift does not happen by accident. It happens because someone paid close enough attention to know exactly where they got stuck and exactly what they needed to get unstuck. That is what this role is built around.
THE ROLE
Livewell Leadership Academy is a private learning community in Pleasanton serving children PreK through 12th grade across two studio locations. We run a Japanese abacus-based math program called SumoMath across both studios. It is built on the Soroban methodology. Children progress through levels at their own pace, building mathematical intuition, speed, and genuine confidence from the ground up. We are looking for a Math Mastery Coach to own this program completely. Not assist with it. Not support it. Own it. You work directly with 22 children across both studios. Two sessions per child per week. Individual and small group. You know every child by name, by level, and by exactly where they are getting hung up. You course correct with precision. You get them back on the path. You coach the guides in each studio on what individual children are working on and what to watch for between your sessions. The guides support you. You lead the program. You track outcomes carefully. Not because someone is asking you to but because you genuinely want to know how every child is moving and why. You work directly with the SumoMath team to refine the program, improve the tools, and shape how the platform develops. You bring real children and real data to that conversation.
WHO YOU ARE
You understand that confidence in math is built one small breakthrough at a time. You know how to create the conditions for those breakthroughs and you find genuine satisfaction when they happen. You pay close attention. You notice where a child is getting stuck before they have fully shut down. You know the difference between a child who needs more time and a child who needs a different approach. You are organized without being rigid. You track progress because it tells you something real not because it is required. You communicate clearly with the adults around you. Guides need to know what each child is working on. You tell them specifically and practically. You own your work. You do not wait to be told what needs to happen. Prior exposure to Japanese Soroban or abacus-based methodology is a meaningful advantage. If that is part of your background, bring it forward. If it is not, the right disposition and genuine curiosity about how children develop mathematical thinking matters more than any credential. We will train the right person completely on the SumoMath methodology. What we cannot train is attention to detail, the ability to build genuine relationships with children and families, and the discipline to track outcomes and lead a team around a shared goal. If you have those things the rest is learnable. This role is well suited for a tutor, a teacher's aide, a retired educator, or anyone who loves working closely with children and wants to be part of something intentional and long term. We are looking for someone who wants to grow with Livewell, not move through it as a temporary/short term position.
