Academic School Year & Summer Program Program Overview United Way of Santa Barbara County's United Learning Center (ULC) provides free, small-group literacy intervention to elementary students who are performing below or approaching grade-level proficiency in English Language Arts. Hosted on campus at local elementary schools, the program is delivered in collaboration with school districts to support student literacy development and align with district goals. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, trained tutors provide structured, multisensory instruction designed to build foundational reading skills. ULC sessions offer students a focused, supportive space to grow as readers while strengthening their reading confidence. Position Overview United Learning Center Tutors deliver high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction to accelerate student reading progress. Tutors administer pre-assessments to develop individualized tutoring plans tailored to each student's literacy needs. They foster an affirming, student-centered environment where learners feel supported, engaged, and confident. This student-facing role is critical to achieving measurable literacy gains, which are demonstrated through post-assessments and ongoing progress monitoring. Additional duties may be assigned to this role as organizational projects, activities, and priorities evolve. Incorporate approved supplemental materials as appropriate to reinforce and enhance Orton-Gillingham-based instruction. Learning Environment Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all students feel safe, encouraged, and engaged.
