SMMUSD is a diverse community dedicated to extraordinary achievement for all while simultaneously closing the achievement gap, and committed to pursuing excellence through equity. Current priorities include social justice standards, restorative justice, project-based learning, innovative teaching and a high level of student engagement. College students are utilized as tutors in the secondary AVID elective classes, facilitating small group learning and providing individual student support in academic subject areas. The district is always seeking passionate college students interested in being role models helping students develop habits of mind and higher academic achievement standards, thereby increasing postsecondary college and career options upon high school graduation. AVID tutors leverage their knowledge and experience to play a crucial role in the success of the AVID elective class, where they facilitate student learning with a rigorous curriculum. As role models, AVID tutors share insights about college and careers, fostering the development of student agency. They conduct study groups, promote student participation and collaboration, and create an engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. Tutors also meet regularly with the AVID teacher to discuss student progress.
