Job Description

The Writing Center Tutor works closely with a diverse student population to offer guidance on writing techniques, helping students identify errors, understand grammar and citation rules, and develop independent editing skills to foster long-term academic success. Work is performed on a very part-time, as-needed basis during Writing Center operating hours. Job descriptions are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Provide academic instruction and support to students in English usage, writing techniques, and effective communication strategies. Assist students, individually and in small groups, with the development and completion of outlines, paragraphs, essays, research papers, and other written assignments. Identify writing errors, explain the reasoning behind necessary corrections, and coach students through revising their work. Support "at risk" students by offering additional guidance and targeted strategies related to the area of assignment. Reinforce classroom lessons related to sentence structure, grammar rules, punctuation and capitalization, academic writing styles, citation formats, and integration of source material. Maintain a professional and supportive learning environment that fosters student growth and self-advocacy. Perform other duties as assigned. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education :
Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Experience :
Previous teaching or tutoring experience in higher education or English is preferred. Experience positively interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds, setting goals and developing strategies to improve student performance, and communicating complex concepts to diverse learners preferred.
Physical Demands:
Work is primarily performed in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while working with students. The employee must frequently communicate with students and staff to exchange accurate information. The role requires the ability to see and read computer screens and written documents (near visual acuity). Occasional lifting of office supplies or books up to 10 pounds may be required.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in an indoor, climate-controlled educational setting with a moderate noise level (typical of an open tutoring or office environment).
