A Tutor works with students who need additional help or review. Provides instruction in an academic subject, or reviews a particular class lesson, or assists with preparing for a test. Works with students one-on-one or in a small group, and usually meets with students outside of school.
We are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic Math and Literacy Tutor to support students in grades K-8 who live in transitional housing in East Harlem. The tutor will provide targeted literacy and math instruction, homework help, and guided practice using IXL. Literacy instruction will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while math instruction will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. The ideal candidate has experience working with diverse student populations and can create a consistent, positive learning environment where students feel supported, engaged, and confident.

$25 per hour Responsibilities Provide engaging, age-appropriate literacy and math instruction to students in grades K-8. Support students with homework assignments in multiple subjects. Use IXL to reinforce targeted literacy and math skills. Adapt instruction to students' academic levels, learning styles, and individual needs. Support reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, foundational literacy, and grade-level math skills. Create a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment. Use effective classroom-management strategies to promote participation and productive learning. Monitor student participation, skill development, and IXL progress. Communicate student needs and progress to the program lead. Maintain a safe, organized, and nurturing learning space. Collaborate with program staff to strengthen instructional quality and student support. Provide consistent and responsive support for students who may enter or transition out of the program during the school year. Requirements Experience tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or working with students in grades K-8. Strong literacy and math skills. Ability to support students with homework across multiple grade levels. Experience using educational technology; familiarity with IXL is preferred. Strong communication, organization, and classroom-management skills. Ability to adjust instruction for different learning levels and needs. Experience working with students in transitional housing or other community-based settings is preferred. Experience supporting students with special needs or in inclusive learning environments is a plus. Dependable, patient, encouraging, and committed to helping students succeed. Background-check clearance is required. Commitment Must be consistently available Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Must commit to the full program period from September 2026 through June 2027.
