Zone is the Community College of Denver (CCD) tutoring center, providing support in math and science, writing, and digital literacy. Math and science tutors at the EXCEL! Zone drop-in tutoring center assist students in a variety of college-level math and/or science courses via in-person and remote sessions. The EXCEL! Zone also supports CCD's High School Diploma Program (HSDP), through which adult learners can receive a high school diploma by demonstrating competency in Math, English, and Civics. All classes occur at night and on weekends, and math classes for the HSDP cover pre-algebra content. Tutors are present in the classroom to work with small groups or individuals, introduce students to developmental math concepts, and assist the instructor. Duties and Responsibilities This job posting is for tutors able to work in the HSDP as well as in the regular, college-level tutoring center.
Math tutors will:
Work in the classroom for CCD's High School Diploma Program for adult learners. In this environment, tutors may work individually with students or in small groups, taking direction from the instructor. Interact professionally with students and staff from a variety of cultural and academic backgrounds. Develop students' critical thinking skills through guided learning and best tutoring practices. Continuously develop and improve their own tutoring strategies and techniques, and commit to ongoing professional growth. Work with people from diverse backgrounds such as individuals with a disability, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and LGBTQ communities. Adhere to confidential information policies. Work with students in the EXCEL! Zone's drop-in tutoring center in one-on-one or small group settings to assist in learning mathematical and/or scientific concepts. In the drop-in tutoring center, tutors may work with students in any of CCD's math or science classes, or with students from other Auraria campus institutions. Work with students online via video conference (WebEx) for online tutoring appointments. Host reviews and workshops for larger groups in specific classes during their regular shift(s). Qualifications Successful completion of an associate's degree in mathematics, science, engineering, or a related discipline, OR successful completion of two years of a four-year degree in the same in which the candidate is currently enrolled. Evidence of mathematical knowledge via the completion of math classes with excellent grades (A or B), or via other official means.
Preferred Qualifications:
Enrollment in or successful completion of a bachelor's or graduate degree in mathematics, science, engineering, or a related discipline. Experience tutoring students or working in a classroom. Experience working in an urban majority-minority college. Knowledge of a second language and/or experience working with students whose first language is not English. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (required) Confidence in pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, college algebra, and calculus I-II. Candidates may be asked to solve and explain relevant mathematical problems in a simulated tutoring interaction. The ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and in a timely manner. Familiarity with D2L, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook (or willingness to learn). Availability for at least one evening (Tuesday or Thursday) shift of the high school diploma program, starting May 26.

  • 12:00 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (preferred) Confidence in any of the following math subjects: statistics, calculus III, differential equations, linear algebra. Confidence in any of the following science subjects at a college level: biology, chemistry, physics. Availability for all the below shifts: Tuesday 6:00

  • 12:00 Time Commitment Candidates are required to be available for at least one HSDP shift. They also have the opportunity to work additional hours in the drop-in center. Summer 2026 hours for the drop-in center are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 11:00
  • 5:00. Fall 2026 hours will most likely be 10:00
  • 6:00 Monday through Thursday, 10:00
  • 3:00 Friday.
Schedules are typically set for the semester, and tutoring services and hours are not scheduled during times that classes are not in session. Mandatory tutor trainings are held prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters and are required before tutors begin work each semester. Tutors are also expected to attend team meetings throughout the semester and to complete any required trainings as scheduled.
