We are growing our team of independent tutors and looking for passionate, skilled educators who love working with young learners. As an ITDC Reading Tutor, you will deliver structured, engaging one-on-one or small-group sessions focused on building the foundational reading skills that K-3 students need to succeed. You will work directly with students assigned by ITDC, following a phonics-based, science of reading-aligned approach. Sessions may be conducted in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format based on student and family needs. This is an independent contractor (1099) position. You set your availability — we handle the client matching, scheduling coordination, and payments. You focus entirely on teaching. Duties & Responsibilities Deliver high-quality one-on-one or small-group tutoring sessions for K-3 students in foundational literacy Use phonics-based, structured literacy instructional strategies aligned with the science of reading Assess student needs at the start of each engagement and adjust instruction accordingly Track student progress and submit brief session notes within 24 hours of each session Communicate professionally and promptly with ITDC and student families Maintain consistent attendance and provide at least 24 hours notice for any cancellations Participate in a brief onboarding call and occasional check-ins with ITDC leadership Always uphold the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality Complete a background check prior to working with any student (required) Experience & Qualifications Required Currently pursuing a degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field — OR — 1+ year of experience working with K-3 students in a tutoring, teaching, or classroom setting Genuine passion for working with young learners and helping early readers build confidence Basic knowledge of foundational reading skills: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension Reliable, punctual, and highly communicative Available evenings and/or weekends consistently Comfortable working independently with minimal day-to-day supervision Must pass a background check prior to working with students Preferred (not required) Completed degree or certification in Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field Familiarity with structured literacy frameworks (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading, CKLA, etc.) Experience student teaching or working in a K-3 classroom setting Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus Why work With I Tutor DC Competitive pay ($40-$45/hr) — above what most tutoring platforms offer Perfect for education majors looking to build real-world classroom and tutoring hours Flexible scheduling — you control your availability, we work around your class schedule We handle all client matching, admin, and payments — you just teach Led by a DC educator with years of early childhood and instructional leadership experience Opportunity to grow with a DC-based tutoring company on the rise Consistent, reliable client assignments — no chasing your own students How to APPLY Submit the following to be considered for this role: Your current resume A brief note (500 words or less) about your experience working with early readers and what makes you a strong fit for K-3 literacy instruction Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
