Job Description

The Student Support Specialist for Tutoring Services is a full-time professional staff position who is responsible for managing student staff and assisting with the day-to-day operations of tutoring, which is an academic skills-building program designed to help students succeed at Lamar University. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Support and collaborates extensively within the Center for Academic Success, as well as across campus with academic and student service departments, faculty, and staff. Hire, train, and supervise tutoring staff utilizing College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) guidelines and standards. Staff includes peer tutors, SI leaders, and embedded tutors. Assist the Assistant Director with developing, implementing, and managing tutoring programs. Create and oversee schedules and sessions for peer tutors. Provide tutoring, academic support workshops, and presentations. Participating in professional development, tutoring, and student success research. Assist with assessing, evaluating, and growing programs, advancing partnerships with multiple departments and individuals across campus, and assisting with marketing and promoting services.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. One year of relevant experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience working in academic support in higher education. Experience supervising student staff. Knowledge of the university educational system and student retention.
Key Competencies:
Knowledge of tutoring best practices, program development, and learning development theory. Demonstrated ability to lead a team of student staff. Superior oral/written communication skills. Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft applications. High-level organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to participate in a highly collaborative work environment. Ability to represent Lamar University with high levels of professionalism and customer service.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to perform standard office-related physical activities, including frequent sitting, standing, and using hands and fingers for tasks such as typing and writing. Occasional walking, reaching, and light bending may be required, along with the ability to visually observe and assess information. Regular, reliable attendance is expected. The physical demands described are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of this role, and reasonable accommodation may be provided in accordance with applicable laws.
Job Conditions:
This position operates in a standard office environment with a controlled climate. Work is primarily performed at a desk using a computer and other office equipment.
