Job Description

Utah Valley University's GEAR UP Utah program offers a rewarding opportunity to make a direct, lasting difference in students' lives while gaining meaningful experience in education, mentoring, outreach, tutoring, and student support. In this role, mentors work one-on-one and in small groups with high school students, providing academic assistance and tutoring while helping students stay engaged, informed, and prepared for graduation and future educational and career goals. This position emphasizes outreach and relationship-building. Mentors are expected to proactively follow up and use approved outreach methods to help students remain connected, accountable, and supported. The position is currently open to support GEAR UP summer programming, including assisting students attending summer school, supporting credit recovery efforts needed for graduation, helping students strengthen academic skills, and preparing students for a successful transition into the upcoming academic school year. This position is ideal for applicants who are passionate about student success, outreach, mentoring, and community impact, and who possess strong knowledge in STEM subjects, especially in mathematics, statistics, physics, and chemistry. The role offers daytime hours aligned with the Provo School District schedule (8:00 am - 3:00 pm) and the opportunity to build professional skills in mentoring, outreach, tutoring, advocacy, leadership, and college-readiness programming. Because relationship consistency is critical to student success, applicants who can commit through the 2026-2027 school year are strongly preferred. Tracks student academic progress and standardized test results, and reports to GEAR UP Counselor. Tracks and follows up with students and works with parents to keep them informed. May work in a GEAR UP class assisting with taking attendance, managing the classroom, and designing and delivering curriculum. Organizes and assists with GEAR UP college-readiness activities, including college tours, parent/student workshops, and other activities as requested by GEAR UP counselors. Mentors students about good decision-making processes related to attendance, rigorous academic course selection, study skills, financial aid, ACT prep, and college and scholarship applications. Tutors as needed, upon request from GEAR UP counselors. Motivates students to succeed through positive reinforcement and being a good role model. Works closely with GEAR UP counselors to identify eligible students, recruit, and onboard them into the GEAR UP program. Makes follow-up calls, appointments, and meets with families and high school counselors. Performs other duties and responsibilities related to the position as assigned by the GEAR UP counselor. Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate's degree plus one year of experience related to the Summary of Duties or any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling three years. Valid driver's license and transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to speak and translate Spanish to English is highly preferred. Knowledge Must have basic academic knowledge because of the completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of academic course selection for high school and college, study skills, financial aid, ACT prep, and college and scholarship applications. Knowledge of and competence in tutoring various core subject areas. Skills Skills in interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making. Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Strong mathematical skills. Abilities Ability to collaborate with students to enhance their knowledge in high school-level courses. Ability to work with GEAR UP personnel and school staff at their assigned schools, colleges, or other locations. Ability to effectively tutor high school students (list subject expertise on supplemental questionnaire). Ability to use initiative, demonstrate dependability, and use time constructively.
