This is a part-time role, non-benefitted, that should average 29 hours or less per week Job Description Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. PVCC is one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The scenic PVCC campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. Academic Affairs-Tutoring Center Employment type: Part-time (wage) 29 hours or less per week
Purpose:
Tutors help students improve their academic performance and achieve their educational goals. They offer guidance and support in one or more of the following subject areas: mathematics, biological sciences, business, physical sciences, and technologies. They assist students in developing study skills, time management strategies, and other techniques that contribute to their academic success. The Tutoring Center also hosts embedded tutors for Math 154 (Quantitative Reasoning) and Math 161 (Precalculus). These tutors are embedded in assigned classes for the length of the class (7 weeks or 15 weeks) to support students both in and out of class, connect students to the Tutoring Center, host review sessions, and model good student behavior.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Tutors may work with students either individually or in groups. Their responsibilities are customized to suit the unique needs of their student(s) but typically involve helping students comprehend complex concepts; offering guidance on assignments, projects, and homework; and fostering confidence in the subject(s) they are studying. Tutors may be embedded into specific courses to further support students in the classroom. Tutoring services also aid students in prioritizing tasks, preparing for exams, and setting goals. In addition, these services facilitate deep learning and equip students with the skills they need to achieve success both during and after their college years. New personnel will complete tutor training and participate in ongoing professional development activities. The Tutoring Center assists students in the following courses and subject areas:
