The role focuses primarily on Reading and Language Arts , supplemented by 4th-grade Math support and targeted preparation for Northshore's Highly Capable (HiCap) / Gifted program assessments . If you have a background in music or can teach a basic instrument (e.g., piano, guitar) or singing, that is a huge plus and offers opportunities for additional hours! Key Responsibilities Reading & Language Arts (Primary Focus): Build advanced reading comprehension, analytical writing, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Guide deep text analysis and foster strong reading habits that align with or exceed 4th-grade standards.
NSD HiCap Prep & Cognitive Enrichment:
Prepare the student for Northshore School District HiCap cognitive screeners/assessments (e.g., CogAT / Iowa / MAP testing). Work on verbal reasoning, non-verbal pattern recognition, quantitative reasoning, and creative logic puzzles.
Math & Subject Support:
Reinforce core 4th-grade math concepts, introducing multi-step word problems and problem-solving strategies. Assist with weekly homework, organization, and study habits. Music Instruction (Optional / Added Advantage): Provide basic music theory, instrument practice, or vocal guidance during extended sessions if qualified. Qualifications & Requirements Experience in tutoring, teaching, or working with upper-elementary students (specifically 3rd-5th grade curriculum). Familiarity with Northshore School District (NSD) academic standards or HiCap / CogAT test formats is highly preferred. Strong command of English language arts, advanced reading comprehension, and elementary math. Patient, encouraging, and adaptive teaching style tailored for curious or high-ability learners.
