Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Recreation Softball Umpire is responsible for officiating adult and/or youth softball games in a fun, community-based recreation league. You will ensure games are played safely, fairly, and according to official rules while promoting good sportsmanship and a positive experience for players, coaches, and spectators. This is a seasonal, part-time position ideal for individuals who enjoy baseball/softball, working outdoors, and being part of their local community.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Officiate assigned games (typically 2-4 games per week during league season) Make accurate, timely calls on balls/strikes, fair/foul, safe/out, and all other rule interpretations Enforce league-specific rules, safety protocols, and code of conduct Maintain order on the field and manage any disputes or unsportsmanlike behavior calmly and professionally Work with the opposing umpire (when two-umpire system is used) or solo as assigned Keep accurate game records (score, ejections, injuries, protests) and submit post-game reports Arrive at least 30 minutes before game time, properly uniformed and prepared Attend pre-season training clinics, rules meetings, and ongoing professional development Promote a safe playing environment by monitoring field conditions and player equipment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Must be at least 16 years old (21+ preferred for adult leagues) Working knowledge of USA Softball (or equivalent) rules — previous playing or umpiring experience is a plus but not required Ability to pass a background check (required for positions involving youth) Reliable transportation and ability to work evenings and weekends Good physical condition (able to stand, walk, and move quickly for 1.5-2.5 hours per game) Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills Professional appearance and attitude at all times Preferred Skills & Attributes Previous umpiring experience (high school, travel ball, or recreation level) USA Softball or NFHS umpire certification (or willingness to obtain and maintain) Passion for softball and community recreation Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure Basic computer skills for submitting game reports online
Work Schedule & Conditions Seasonal:
Typically, April/May through August/September (exact dates vary by program)
Hours:
