Designated Administrator Primary Function:

The job of the Driver Education Professional is to provide high quality instruction both in the classroom and out on the roadways in Delaware. Delaware driver education teachers must hold a valid state license or certificate, a bachelor's degree, and have a clean driving record (no more than 5 points in 5 years). They must complete specialized certification, often including 30 hours of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training, to teach at Delaware schools.

Key Requirements:

Certification:

Must hold or be eligible for a Standard Certificate as a Driver Education and Traffic Safety Education Teacher.

Experience & Skills:

Strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to multitask, and experience in developing grade-appropriate lessons.

Driving Record:

No more than 5 points in the 5 years prior to application; no suspensions or revocations.

License:

Must hold a valid, current driver's license.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:

Instruction:

Teachers provide 30 hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of in-car instruction/observation (7 hours of driving, 7 hours of observation).

Curriculum:

Topics include proactive driving strategies, car control, and traffic laws.

Environment:

In-car instruction requires a dual-control vehicle.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Standard Certificate as a Driver Education and Traffic Safety Education Teacher. Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to multitask. The ideal candidate will have experience with developing grade appropriate lessons that meet the needs of varied types of learners. Teachers are expected to work in a professional setting with other grade level and content area teachers.
