CHRISTIAN EDUCATION TEACHER
The Christian Education teacher at San Jose Episcopal Day School plays a central role in leading and guiding the faculty and staff, our students, and their families in their faith walk. From leading a weekly Early Childhood Chapel Experience for PreK 3, PreK4, and Kindergarten students to leading weekly Kingdom Theatre classes that immerse students in the stories of the Bible, this role is dedicated to bringing the Old and New Testaments to life and to helping all members find belonging and a calling within the Body of Christ.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The SJEDS Christian Education Teacher will: Teach weekly Kingdom Theatre classes to all students in grades PK3 to 6th grade. These classes bring the stories of the Bible to life by immersing them in dramatization experiences, using costumes and props, and engaging students in reflective conversations about the nature of God, His love for all people, and our responsibility as children of God. Lead a weekly 20-minute Chapel experience for our littlest learners, students in Grades PK3 through Kindergarten. These gatherings introduce students to worship following the Episcopal tradition in a developmentally appropriate way. Collaborate with the Head of School and the Church rector to provide religious leadership that advances the Parish school's mission. Work in concert with the school and church leadership teams, as well as faculty members, to provide guidance for special events and student outreach. Adhere to the school's Faculty Characteristics of Professional Excellence and the guidelines put forth in our Faculty Handbook Embrace and live out the school's mission and educational philosophy Demonstrate careful preparation for instruction, a commitment to utilizing best practices in teaching and learning, and effective strategies for evaluating all students' progress continuously and effectively Develop and maintain a classroom atmosphere that is emotionally safe, respectful, positive, encouraging, and inclusive, using management and teaching strategies that cultivate the spiritual, social, and emotional skills and well-being of our students Cultivate close-knit, trusting relationships with parents through frequent and respectful communication Support the broader needs of the school community, including, but not limited to, participation in school professional development initiatives, community events, service and outreach opportunities, committee membership, parent and faculty meetings, and other commitments as requested by the Administration. Practice discretion and confidentiality Demonstrate a lifelong commitment to remaining on the front edge of the Education (or related) field, seeking opportunities to use emerging research to inform practice and remaining open to new approaches, techniques, and resources Attend scheduled faculty and departmental meetings Participate in professional development Maintain professional credentials and/or certification
QUALIFICATIONS
The SJEDS Christian Education Teacher should possess: A bachelor's degree in Education, Religion, or a related field Teaching experience working with elementary students Appreciation for and understanding of elementary-aged children, their developmental needs, and the ability to develop positive relationships with them Knowledge of the Episcopal tradition and a desire to create a welcoming and inclusive Episcopal school community Willingness to honor and respect the wide variety of religious traditions and beliefs found in a diverse body of students An ability to communicate clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues Familiarity with technology and an openness to learning new technologies Collaborative spirit when working with colleagues across the school community Strong organizational skills Embraces the whole-child philosophy and seeks to help students develop in all aspects San Jose Episcopal Day School is an equal opportunity employer.
