Job Description
Job Description Syracuse High School, USD 494, is seeking a dynamic and dedicated high school vocational teacher to join our team. We are a small, close-knit school situated in a rural agricultural area, where families and students alike value and demonstrate strong work ethic, ingenuity, and integrity. Our school community is committed to a culture of success and continuous improvement, fostering academic excellence and preparing students with the practical skills they'll need for post-secondary success. Additionally, USD 494 operates on a four-day school week, with Fridays off. With an enrollment of 144 students and average class sizes of 10 to 15 (for vocational courses), we are the perfect size to provide the resources needed for a strong program to flourish, while being small enough to ensure meaningful relationships are built with students that positively influence character and crucial soft skills. Teaching Responsibilities Teaching responsibilities are flexible based on department needs and candidate strengths, but have traditionally included Metals I, Metals II, Metals III, Ag Power, and Ag Mechanics within a well-established department and an approved Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems pathway. Job Requirements Hold a current Kansas teaching license or demonstrate the ability to obtain Kansas licensure prior to employment Metal Working I, II, and III (welding, cutting, fabrication, finishing) Agricultural Power (small engines, diagnostics, maintenance, repair) Agricultural Mechanics (tool use, construction, mechanical systems, shop practices) Proficiency in welding processes including MIG, TIG, and Stick, as well as metal fabrication techniques Ability to safely operate, maintain, and instruct students in the use of shop equipment, power tools, and machinery Ability to deliver instruction that balances foundational theory with hands-on, real-world application and skill development Experience designing and implementing project-based learning that reflects industry standards and practices Strong classroom and shop management skills, including the ability to supervise students effectively in an active lab environment Commitment to maintaining and enforcing strict safety procedures and a clean, organized shop Ability to assess student skill development and provide clear, actionable feedback Effective communication and collaboration skills with students, staff, and stakeholders Basic technology skills for instruction, grading, and communication Other Opportunities In addition to teaching, a variety of coaching and sponsorship opportunities are available.
