Job Description
As York High School's alternative education program, YHS Pathways, enters its 22nd year, there are exciting opportunities to join our team! Beginning the 2026-2027 school year, YHS Pathways is seeking a dynamic, compassionate, and strong teacher certified to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Familiarity with and/or comfort with the NextGen science standards is preferred. There are no special or additional teacher certification requirements for someone to teach in an alternative program, so possessing a math certification is sufficient.
Our program is a school-within-a-school model that capitalizes on balancing individualized curriculum and programming with the exceptional courses and electives at YHS. Applicants must be creative, empathetic, and passionate about teaching, and they are encouraged to consider how their individual hobbies and interests outside of the classroom can enrich our curricular offerings.
While every community has different needs and student populations, and alternative education can be defined in myriad ways, there are several hallmarks of teachers who will not only elevate their students' academic experiences by providing engaging and relevant curriculum, but who will also thrive as professionals in an alternative education setting. Teachers in alternative programs believe that every student can succeed; they understand the risk factors and life challenges faced by the students in the program. Alt ed teachers have the ability to modify their instruction so that students of diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, language and abilities backgrounds have an equal opportunity to learn through work that is challenging, interesting and related to the real world. Instructional strategies reflect the teacher's awareness of students' cultural / social differences, in particular those that might have an adverse effect on student learning or behavior. And, an alternative education teacher's approach to classroom management is proactive, restorative, responsive, and flexible. Through the whole learning process teachers communicate consistent, high expectations for all students.
