Aug 25, 2026 Job Description East Greenwich Public Schools seeks a highly qualified Adaptive Physical Education Teacher for a one year only position during the 2026-2027 school year. The Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher is a district-wide position under the supervision of the Director of Student Services and building principals. The APE teacher provides adaptive physical education to students with disabilities across grade levels and educational settings within the district. The APE teacher collaborates with building-based Teams to assess and progress monitor students who qualify for Adaptive Physical Education services. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Utilizes developmental teaching methods in physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills, and skills in individual sports and other activities, as well as group sports and games Demonstrates Knowledge of motor control for teaching physical education to individuals with disabilities Demonstrates knowledge of developmental sequences and motor characteristics associated with a number of disabilities Assesses and teaches skills in a number of adapted physical education techniques and procedures for developing individualized education programs (IEPs) in collaboration with general physical education and in accordance with state and federal regulations for all students on the adaptive teacher's caseload. Works effectively as a member of the school-based problem-solving team Collaborates with and coaches support staff within the classroom setting, maintaining routines and lessons for all students on the APE caseload. Effectively communicates with special educators, support staff, building administrators, related service providers, and families regarding the APE needs of all students on the APE caseload. Demonstrates effective communication skills Adheres to all pertinent timeline dates, procedures, necessary paperwork, and case management duties. Utilizes de-escalation strategies (Safety Care Curriculum) with students as needed to assist in emotional and behavioral regulation of students in need and promptly reports all incidents of behavioral escalation to the school team.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Rhode Island Department of Education certification in All Grades Adapted Physical Education Teacher, Grades PK-12. A Bachelor's degree or higher. Strong oral and written communication skills. The capability of responding simultaneously to a variety of needs for students and staff while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity to individual needs. Ability to interact with students, staff, and members of the community in a pleasing and positive manner. Ability to effectively handle issues utilizing a personable problem-solving approach. Capable of working collegially with all levels of administration and staff. Ability to prioritize the needs and requests of students and staff within the school setting and respond in a professional and efficient manner. Demonstrated proficiency in essential computing applications as required. Citizenship, residency or work VISA in the United States required Tools & Equipment Used The individual should be familiar with the operation of standard office equipment, including, but not limited to, personal computers, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
