Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract Put your skills as an expert Sign Language Interpreter to meaningful use by supporting students in a dynamic, engaging school environment. This contract opportunity is located near Pelham, AL, offering a chance to make a real impact through vital communication support and advocacy in educational settings.
Qualifications & Experience:
Proven proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with educational interpreting in K-12 schools Ability to facilitate communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing students and staff within the classroom and during extracurricular activities Possession of required state or national certification for educational sign language interpreters, or the readiness to obtain credentials Adaptability and professionalism to work collaboratively with teachers, support personnel, and families Strong organizational skills with commitment to student learning and inclusion
Role Responsibilities:
Interpret classroom instruction and interactions, ensuring student participation and access to the curriculum Provide language translation during parent/teacher conferences, assemblies, and school events as needed Work as part of a collaborative team—consult regularly with teachers, special educators, and administration to support student progress and individualized education plans (IEPs) Maintain ethical, professional standards as outlined by interpreting associations and school policies Promote a positive, inclusive environment for all students, fostering communication independence Document services provided and monitor students' communication needs regularly, making recommendations when adjustments are needed This role offers opportunities to grow professionally while supporting students on their educational journey.
