THIS JOB POSTING IS FOR ANY ITINERANT TRANSPORTATION NURSE POSITION IN THE DISTRICT THAT MAY BECOME AVAILABLE FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR. SCHOOLS MAY VARY BASED ON VACANCIES.
Job Title - Itinerant Transportation Nurse Supervisor(s):
Principal, Zone Nurse, Director of Nursing Job Goal:
To provide health care services and assistance to students with special medical needs during school bus transportation.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Minimum of one (1) year experience in hospital or community health setting. Any other certificate required by state law. Valid BLS and CPR card. Ability to travel to the bus site. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices Proficiency in oral and written communication skills Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced work environment. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information. Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive feedback. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and assist students with specific needs. Ability to transfer students and provide physical intervention when required. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities. Aids in primary prevention and control of communicable diseases. Recommends exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with applicable infectious and contagious disease protocols. Provide healthcare support and assistance to students with special medical needs during school bus transportation in accordance with the student's health care plan or in a medical emergency. Administer medications or medical treatments in accordance with medication administration procedures during transportation. Communicate with bus drivers, school administrators, and parents as necessary to address any health-related concerns or emergencies during transit. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal laws. Participates in professional development and /or educational programs to earn required CEUs for licensure. Assists with transfers or helps students board and exit school buses as requested. Assists bus driver in keeping routine records related to student transportation or behavior as assigned. Assists with movement of students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring and physical intervention). Assists bus drivers in maintaining discipline and responding to the physical needs of students. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Works cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system's vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
