The primary role of an elementary special education life skills teacher is to maximize each student's potential. This role focuses on teaching functional academics, communication, social-emotional, and daily living skills to support increased independence. The teacher develops and implements IEPs, monitors student progress, and collaborates with families, paraeducators, general education staff, and related service providers to ensure consistent supports and services. Classroom instruction and learning activities are highly structured and individualized, using evidence-based strategies, visual supports, assistive technology, and behavior supports to help students access learning in the least restrictive environment.SALARY RANGE

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement required (Special Education) Knowledge of IDEA, Washington State special education regulations, and IEP development and implementation to ensure compliance and monitor student progress. Skilled in working with students with disabilities in an integrated model with multiple staff. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with administrators, staff, students, and community agencies. Skilled in diagnostic assessment and instructional strategies for addressing learning and behavioral needs. Expertise and/or experience in behavior management to support student access to learning. Physical ability to lift and transfer up to approximately 60 pounds. Commitment to continuous professional growth and development. Collaboratively work with interdisciplinary teams and interagency teams. Awareness and appreciation of student diversity, with the ability to set appropriate social, academic, and behavioral expectations for individual students. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all professional responsibilities. Understanding of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) and ability to apply it across classroom and community settings. Skilled in using multiple assessment strategies and preparing students for Washington State Assessments or alternate assessments. Skilled in teaching self-determination and self-advocacy. Ability to design and implement rigorous, individualized programs for students with a range of disabilities from mild to significant. Demonstrate an enthusiasm and joy for teaching, Demonstrates ability to relate to all students in a warm, accepting manner, Demonstrates ability to facilitate peer relationships among students, Participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans for special education students, which include functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention plans, Plan and implement a variety of functional academic, vocational, leisure and learning activities for students with varied skills and potentials, Maintain continuous measurement data on student progress, Collaborate as a team member in staffing, diagnosis, and least restrictive placement of students, Conduct conferences with parents and students to report student progress toward meeting the goals and objectives as stated in the IEP, Coordinate goal development, assessment, and instruction with teachers, instructional assistants and/or job coaches, and other support staff Communicate and explain school programs to families, Demonstrate a positive role model for students, Demonstrate a willingness to accept both routine and special tasks, Teach and assist with the health/hygiene activities/skills of students, Willingness to assist students with disabilities with feeding and toileting needs, Train, monitor, and supervise instructional assistants, paraeducators, other, Be well versed in special education laws and current special education needs, Maintain records and keep deadlines, Other assignments deemed necessary and appropriate to assure success of students.WORKING CONDITIONS
Working area will be in a special education classroom. Provide specially designed instruction to students. Maintain inventory and equipment assigned to classroom. Provide programming within budgetary constraints. Teaching assignment will be determined on an annual basis by the Director of Special Education.CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious diseases as carried by students. The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
