Job Description
Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Part-Time Principal Investigator / Aerospace Engineer specializing in UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and avionics systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge aerospace projects, focusing on the design, development, and testing of innovative drone platforms and integrated avionics solutions. As a key member of our team, you will leverage your expertise in mechanical and systems engineering to advance UAV capabilities while ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Responsibilities Co-write SBIR proposals. Lead the design and development of UAV airframes, integrating mechanical, electrical, and avionics components using CAD software such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo, and AutoCAD. Manage project schedules to ensure timely delivery of prototypes and system updates while coordinating cross-disciplinary teams in systems engineering and manufacturing. Develop and validate avionics systems including sensors, signal processing algorithms, data collection methods, and embedded software using Python, C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Simulink, and other programming tools. Conduct root cause analysis on system failures or performance issues by applying FEA (Finite Element Analysis), GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), and other engineering principles aligned with ASME codes & standards. Oversee integration of flight control systems compliant with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) and DoD (Department of Defense) requirements for military applications. Perform rigorous testing and validation of UAV systems through simulation, lab experiments, and field trials to ensure reliability under various operational conditions. Document all phases of development following AS9100 standards for aerospace quality management while managing requirements using requirements management tools. Experience Proven background in aerospace or mechanical engineering with hands-on experience in UAV design, manufacturing, or maintenance. Strong knowledge of avionics systems including sensors, signal processing techniques, and system integration within aviation environments. Experience with CAD software such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo or Pro/ENGINEER for mechanical design; proficiency in AutoCAD is a plus. Demonstrated ability to develop embedded software using Python, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink; familiarity with LabVIEW is advantageous. Familiarity with aerospace standards such as
AS9100, ASME
codes & standards; experience working within FAA or military regulatory frameworks is preferred. Skilled in project scheduling, requirements management, root cause analysis, FEA simulations, and system design documentation. Knowledge of aircraft maintenance procedures, aviation safety protocols, and data collection techniques relevant to unmanned aircraft operations. Prior experience working on DoD projects or military-grade UAVs is highly desirable; familiarity with federal regulations governing aviation safety is essential.
