  • $102,879 Primary Purpose of Department The mission of Facilities Management is to provide a quality learning, research, and living environment for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and the community by planning, building, operating, and maintaining the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Primary Purpose of Position The Energy Manager will monitor the energy usage and performs cost analysis; develops a strategic plan for University wide-energy needs; identifies building infrastructure problems impacting energy consumption; analyzes heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting systems to determine optimum operating conditions. This position develops and implements energy procurement strategies for the University. Reviews plans and designs for building construction and makes recommendations regarding energy conservation and appropriate technology to ensure efficient energy and environmental compliance. Summary of Position Responsibilities Identify, analyze, and resolve energy inefficiencies in building mechanical, lighting, and control systems through audits, data analysis, and field assessments. Develop and implement campuswide energy optimization strategies to improve performance, reduce costs, and support sustainability goals. Manage utility procurement, consumption analysis, metering systems, budgeting support, and internal utility chargeback processes. Provide technical leadership and review for mechanical, energy, and utility infrastructure projects. Support planning, design, and construction by reviewing projects for energy efficiency, lifecycle cost effectiveness, environmental compliance, and adherence to university standards. Conduct lifecycle cost and total cost of ownership analyses to inform capital planning, standards, and specification development. Monitor energy and environmental regulations to ensure compliance and coordinate with city, state, and utility stakeholders on programs, incentives, and reporting. Lead and supervise staff and student employees, including performance management, training, professional development, and foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Coordinate and collaborate with Facilities Management, Capital Projects, Sustainability, and academic partners on energy initiatives and programs. Develop and deliver energy performance reports, educational materials, campus tours, and outreach programs to advance energy awareness and stewardship across the university community. Represent the University in peer networks and professional forums to share best practices and benchmark energy performance. Minimum Education/Experience Bachelors degree in engineering, architecture, Building Systems or equivalent, and 5 years of experience in energy management or engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience 7 years experience in energy management or engineering and a Certified Energy Manager credential or Professional engineering or Architecture license or equivalent. Managerial/supervisory or team leading experience strongly preferred.
