As a 3D CAD Designer for Fat Fender Garage, you'd be responsible for chassis product innovation, part's file keeping, operating 3D printers and more to help our customers build the truck of their dreams. We specialize in full, frame up vintage truck builds and premier custom chassis building, along with our growing custom parts business. We are looking for a skilled 3D CAD Designer to assist in the development of custom classic truck parts/chassis to expand the retail side of the company, and to custom tailor or design one-off parts for our build projects.
Responsibilities include:
See that a new idea moves from initial prototype stage to becoming a manufacturable and sellable chassis / product. Manually fabricate rough prototypes as needed to help demonstrate a proof of concept. Use SolidWorks CAD software to model custom parts for various manufacturing processes such as: CNC machining, laser cutting, CNC bending, 3D printing and more. Prepare drawings and prints needed for manufacturing. Maintain clean organization of part files, assemblies, and documentation. Update prior documentation and 3D files as necessary. Operate 3D printers and other CNC machinery to make prototypes and end-use parts. Test-fit prototypes and make any adjustments needed to move on to production. Create and update BOMs, Exploded Views and internal documents as necessary during projects. Create blueprints for assembly complete chassis builds according to Fat Fender Garage standards, drawings, and build sheets. Assist powertrain systems (engine and transmission) to chassis, ensuring precise alignment and secure installation. CAD and adjust suspension systems - including control arms, coilovers, sway bars, and steering linkages - for optimal geometry and function. Create if needed solid rear axle configurations, ensuring correct pinion angle, alignment, and torque specs. Maintain strict adherence to build timelines, quality standards, and safety procedures. Collaborate with the Operations team and Chassis Welders to communicate build progress, parts needs, and potential fitment challenges. Assist with post-assembly checks for leaks, alignment, and component functionality before final delivery. Keep work areas organized, tools maintained, and documentation current in the build tracking system. Qualifications include:
3+ years using 3D CAD SolidWorks software. Surfacing skill in SolidWorks is a plus. Applicant must have experience in designing for manufacturing. 3D printing experience is a plus. Automotive industry experience is preferred, but not required. Sharp attention to detail, strong verbal/written communication skills, and the ability to follow instructions are all necessities. Knowledge of sheetmetal design and fabrication, machining, Tig & Mig welding, etc. is a plus. Problem solver. Creative thinker. Benefits include:
