This is not a pure architectural role; it's a hybrid position for someone who wants to stay deep in technical detailing long-term, not transition into design-only architecture work. Core Responsibilities Read and interpret architectural floor plans, elevations, building sections, and structural plans Draft detailed building cross-sections and elevations, including structural connections, flashing, and waterproofing details at window/door openings Review structural, architectural, and shop drawings together to identify conflicts or potential issues (e.g., structural interferences, waterproofing gaps, tolerance/clearance problems) before fabrication or installation Propose practical solutions to identified issues and communicate them clearly to architects, engineers, or project managers Produce fabrication-ready shop drawings for steel doors and aluminum window/door systems based on provided manufacturer profiles (e.g., Marvin, Loewen, Secco, Quaker) Translate architectural intent into buildable, code-compliant details suitable for both fabrication and field installation Coordinate revisions with sales, project management, and installation crews Ideal Background Strong foundation in architectural drafting (floor plans, elevations, sections) — but with genuine interest in construction detailing, not just design Solid understanding of residential construction methods and sequencing Working knowledge of structural detailing at openings (headers, rough openings, flashing/waterproofing assemblies) Ability to cross-reference structural and architectural documents to catch discrepancies early — this is a problem-solving role, not just a drafting one Background in wood trim/millwork detailing is a strong plus Comfortable working from manufacturer profile libraries to produce fabrication drawings (not just design-intent drawings) Experience with new construction and residential retrofit conditions is a plus, since detailing requirements differ significantly between the two Software/Technical Skills Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D drafting is essential; Revit/BIM familiarity a plus but not required) Ability to work from manufacturer CAD details and adapt them to project-specific conditions What Sets the Right Candidate Apart Genuinely enjoys the technical/fabrication side of the work, not just conceptual design Naturally spots problems before they become expensive change orders — thinks like a builder, not just a draftsman Detail-oriented and comfortable owning a drawing from architectural intent through to shop-floor execution Sees long-term career growth in specialized fenestration/building envelope detailing — this isn't a stepping-stone role toward pure architecture
