Back CAD Designer Engineering Design / Drafting Plainfield , Illinois Permanent Sep 30, 2026 Title CAD Designer Location Hybrid - Plainfield, IL Overview This opportunity supports a global storage solutions organization specializing in tanks, terminals, plate structures, and related industrial storage systems. The Plate Structures Designer develops accurate 2D and/or 3D CAD deliverables, including drawings and bills of material, for plate structures and associated foundations, structural components, and piping. This role operates in a fast-paced, production-oriented engineering environment where drawing accuracy, constructability, schedule commitment, and increasing design independence are essential. Must-Have Domains Plate structure and steel detailing for industrial storage systems. 2D/3D CAD drafting and production design. Structural, foundation, and piping design documentation. Core Responsibilities Produce detailed drawings for customer approval, fabrication, and construction in accordance with applicable design codes, company standards, drawings, and specifications. Develop constructible drawing details with consideration for safe field erection, installation, and use. Generate and review bills of material and compare design deliverables against project estimates, identifying discrepancies to the project team. Utilize engineering programs, CAD tools, templates, and document management systems to efficiently produce and control project deliverables. Estimate task durations, meet committed deadlines, and collaborate with project engineers, designers, and engineering management. Must-Have Experience 0-5 years of relevant drafting, design, steel detailing, or related technical experience. Experience or demonstrated proficiency with 2D and/or 3D CAD platforms such as MicroStation and AutoCAD. Knowledge of steel detailing practices, industry drafting conventions, geometry, trigonometry, unit conversions, quantity take-offs, and basic bills of material. Education High school diploma plus at least one year of post-high school education or equivalent experience. Associate degree or two-year technical degree, or equivalent experience, preferred. Preferred Skills Knowledge of industrial storage products, plate structures, tanks, terminals, or related markets. Strong analytical and technical problem-solving capabilities. Ability to manage multiple assignments and tight production deadlines. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate across engineering, project, and management teams. Adaptability and ability to work with increasing independence as assignment complexity grows. Work Environment Fast-paced, production-oriented engineering and drafting environment requiring both speed and accuracy. Regular collaboration with Project Engineers, Plate Structures Designers, Plate Structures Engineers, and engineering management. Requires effective use of document management, collaboration, and productivity tools.
