Job Description

Job Title:
Drafter Job Description The Drafter serves as the primary production resource for the drafting team, creating detailed designs for custom metal structures using Autodesk Inventor. This role focuses on aluminum and steel structural design for one-of-a-kind projects tailored to specific client requirements, ensuring that no two projects are the same. The Drafter works closely with an engineer and a parametric designer while also independently learning and adapting on the job to support a fast-paced, project-driven environment. Responsibilities Produce detailed 3D models and 2D drawings for custom aluminum and steel structures using Autodesk Inventor. Translate client specifications into accurate, buildable designs for metal structures, ensuring each project meets all technical and quality requirements. Collaborate closely with an engineer and a parametric designer to refine concepts, resolve design challenges, and ensure structural integrity. Apply sound structural design principles to aluminum and steel components used in applications such as bridges and marine construction. Coordinate with the fabrication shop to ensure drawings are practical, efficient to manufacture, and aligned with shop capabilities and processes. Incorporate feedback from the fabrication team to improve design details, manufacturability, and overall product quality. Work with CAD tools such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and other relevant software to maintain accurate and organized drawing files. Adapt quickly to changing project requirements, schedules, and client needs in a dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environment. Participate in design reviews and team discussions to identify potential issues and propose effective solutions. Engage in self-directed learning to expand proficiency in tools, materials, and methods related to structural metal design. Support multiple concurrent projects, managing time and priorities to meet deadlines and production schedules. Ensure all drawings and models comply with internal standards and industry best practices for structural and mechanical drafting. Essential Skills At least 3 years of hands-on experience using Autodesk Inventor for structural or mechanical drafting and design. Strong drafting skills with proficiency in CAD software, including Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD. Proven experience designing aluminum and steel structures, including understanding of structural design principles. Experience in metal fabrication or working in a metal fabrication shop environment. Ability to design for aluminum fabrication, including welded aluminum structures and assemblies. Experience with structural steel design and detailing for fabricated components. Familiarity with applications such as bridge design, bridge construction, or related structural projects. Experience or exposure to marine or marine construction projects involving metal structures. Ability to read, interpret, and produce detailed technical drawings and fabrication documents. Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of how parts fit and function within larger assemblies. Capability to work effectively in a small, collaborative team and communicate clearly with engineers, designers, and fabrication staff. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and schedule pressures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a small fabrication shop, particularly one focused on metal or structural products. Familiarity with SolidWorks and Civil 3D or other civil design tools is beneficial. Exposure to civil or structural projects, including bridges or marine structures, is an advantage. Background in mechanical, civil, or structural disciplines, whether through work experience or education. Ability to pivot quickly between tasks and projects while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Woodland, WA.
