Job Description
Job Title:
Control System Engineer Job Description The Control System Engineer provides essential technical expertise and performs intermediate-complexity engineering work in support of commercial and industrial projects. Working under the guidance of a Discipline Lead or Area Lead Engineer, this role analyzes technical challenges, recommends practical solutions, and develops control system designs that comply with project scope, cost, schedule, and quality requirements. The engineer collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and clients to deliver safe, reliable, and compliant control and instrumentation systems across all phases of engineering, procurement, and construction. Responsibilities Analyze technical problems of intermediate complexity and make independent recommendations for control system and instrumentation solutions that meet project requirements. Develop and review engineering specifications, design criteria, and control system architecture to ensure alignment with project objectives and applicable codes and standards. Perform and check engineering analyses and calculations, including control systems sizing for control valves, relief valves, flow elements, thermowells, and other instrumentation. Specify materials, equipment, and systems related to control and instrumentation, ensuring technical suitability and compliance with project and regulatory requirements. Coordinate technical issues and interfaces with other engineering disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients throughout the project lifecycle. Execute engineering work in compliance with the Project Quality Plan, internal procedures, and approved project scope, cost, and schedule baselines. Establish, monitor, and report on key material quantities, providing analysis and forecasts to support project planning and control. Provide technical support for equipment and material procurement, including developing scopes of work, performing technical bid evaluations, and reviewing vendor submittals. Support construction administration activities by responding to construction requests for information and providing timely technical clarifications and guidance. Perform a broad range of instrumentation and control (I&C) design activities, including design definition, control systems architecture and development, and digital control system design. Design and support Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), including both hardware and software applications. Configure and review DCS, PLC, and SIS designs developed by the design group, ensuring consistency with project requirements and industry best practices. Develop and review network configurations, including network switches, communication protocols, routing, and layout for control systems. Support and review Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) development to ensure accurate representation of instrumentation and control functions. Develop and refine Human-Machine Interface (HMI) configurations and related control system interfaces. Apply Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) concepts to the design and specification of safety-related control functions. Prepare, review, and modify instrument and control systems design documents, including instrument datasheets, I/O wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, logic diagrams, cable schedules, and instrument installation details. Create and maintain instrument indexes and datasheets, and generate reports using the Intergraph SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) database. Develop control system narrative specifications of intermediate complexity that clearly describe system functions, operating philosophy, and control strategies. Develop basic control system logic diagrams and cause-and-effect diagrams to define control sequences and interlocks. Represent the control systems discipline in model reviews, providing input on layout, routing, and equipment placement to support constructability and operability. Ensure all engineering work complies with applicable local, state, and federal codes, statutes, guidelines, and relevant Department of Energy orders where applicable. Utilize standard office software tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and presentation software, to document and communicate engineering work effectively. Essential Skills Bachelor of Science degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering field. Minimum of five (5) years of work-related experience in control systems, instrumentation, or closely related engineering disciplines. Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local codes and standards, including relevant Department of Energy orders where applicable. Intermediate knowledge of discipline-specific codes, standards, and engineering practices relevant to control systems and instrumentation. Proven ability to perform engineering work in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal codes, statutes, and guidelines. Demonstrated job-related technical knowledge necessary to complete control systems and instrumentation engineering tasks of intermediate complexity. Ability to communicate effectively with project management, coworkers, clients, vendors, and subcontractors in both written and verbal forms. Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner to meet project deadlines. Intermediate computer and software skills, including proficiency with word processing, email, spreadsheet, and electronic presentation programs. Experience providing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services on commercial or industrial projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with design and development of PLC, DCS, and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) hardware and software applications. Familiarity with digital control systems, process controls, and control system architectures in commercial or industrial environments. Experience with network configuration for control systems, including network switches, communication protocols, routing, and layout. Hands-on experience with P&ID development support and review to ensure accurate instrumentation and control representation.
