Sr. Project Engineer (Heavy Industrial)

The Role We are seeking a proactive, hands-on Sr. Project Engineer to own and manage a $6MM annual capital project budget for our Sylacauga facility. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, you will oversee the full lifecycle of major plant infrastructure and heavy equipment installations—from initial cost analysis and structural steel/foundation design through to construction management and final commissioning. This is not a passive project management desk job; we need a true, hands-on technical owner who loves heavy continuous processing operations and thrives when solving complex engineering challenges out in the field.
What You Will Do Capital Budget Execution:
Manage a $6MM/year capital budget, overseeing project estimating, scheduling, design, cost tracking, and field execution.
Heavy Equipment Installations:
Design and oversee the installation of heavy process equipment, including milling/grinding machinery, conveyor belts, loading platforms, and dust collection systems.
Infrastructure Upgrades:
Manage facility structural upgrades, including structural steel design, foundation design, and railroad extensions.
Regulatory & Safety Compliance:
Ensure all designs and installations comply with building codes, environmental regulations, and strict EHS safety standards.
Collaborative Troubleshooting:
Partner with Operations and Process Engineering to troubleshoot severe plant equipment failures, optimize machinery for maximum uptime, and execute lean cost-reduction initiatives.
Vendor & Contractor Management:
Direct outside vendors and construction contractors, keeping projects aligned with plant operations, safety, and quality metrics.
What You Bring Education:
BS in Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Experience:
5+ years of project engineering experience within a heavy continuous processing or lean manufacturing environment.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in AutoCAD for plant layout and basic structural design, alongside standard enterprise tools (SAP, Excel/Google Workspace).
Project Track Record:
Proven history of managing large-scale capital projects, managing outside vendor contracts, and overseeing heavy mechanical equipment installations.
Mindset:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a self-starter attitude, and a natural ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams (Operations, EHS, Quality).
