Project Engineer Job Description This long-term Project Engineer position offers the opportunity to support complex water, wastewater, and heavy civil construction projects while growing into a future Project Manager role. You will work closely with project management and field leadership to keep projects on schedule and within budget, ensure accurate documentation, and help coordinate day-to-day construction activities across multiple sites in the Peoria, Glendale, and Phoenix metro area. The role combines field-based involvement with office-based planning and reporting, providing strong exposure to all phases of construction project delivery. Responsibilities Support Project Managers with budgeting, cost tracking, and financial reporting to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget. Monitor project schedules, track progress, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and execution. Manage submittals and ensure all project documentation is accurate, complete, and submitted on time. Assist in preparing subcontractor and supplier agreements, including drafting and processing change documentation. Partner with field leadership, including Superintendents and Foremen, to maintain a safe, productive, and well-organized jobsite. Help coordinate day-to-day construction activities to support quality workmanship and steady project progress. Collaborate with project teams to resolve issues in the field and support timely decision-making. Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders. Use Microsoft Office tools to prepare reports, logs, tracking documents, and presentations for project teams and leadership. Support the implementation of project controls, including tracking quantities, costs, and production metrics. Assist with coordination and review of drawings and models using AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, and Revit where applicable. Contribute to a team-oriented culture by communicating clearly, sharing information, and supporting colleagues across disciplines. Essential Skills At least 1+ years of Project Engineer experience in the construction industry within water, wastewater, or heavy civil projects. Hands-on experience with construction management or project engineering on treatment plants, lift stations, booster stations, reclamation facilities, or similar infrastructure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, and Revit for reviewing and coordinating design documents. Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate documentation and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues, evaluate options, and support effective solutions in the field and office. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with changing project demands. Clear, concise communication skills, both written and verbal, with a team-oriented mindset. Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in cost tracking, documentation, and schedule monitoring. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers, field leadership, and subcontractors. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Prior water and wastewater construction experience is preferred and highly valued. Experience working on heavy civil projects such as treatment plants, lift stations, booster stations, and reclamation facilities. Familiarity with mechanical systems and facilities associated with water and wastewater infrastructure. Interest in developing into a Project Manager role and taking on increasing responsibility over time. Ability to adapt to evolving project needs and schedules while maintaining a positive, team-focused attitude. Work Environment Projects are located throughout the Peoria, Glendale, and greater Phoenix metro area, with a focus on treatment plants, lift stations, booster stations, reclamation facilities, and similar heavy civil and water/wastewater infrastructure. This is a salaried role with typical hours of Monday through Friday, generally 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with flexibility required based on project demands. The Project Engineer will spend a majority of their time in the field on active project sites, working closely with field leadership and project teams. The position does not require out-of-state travel, offering geographic stability while supporting a strong backlog of work.
