Full Job Description Position Summary:
We are seeking a technically skilled and highly organized Project Engineer - Steel Detailing to support the successful execution of structural and miscellaneous metals projects. This role serves as a key liaison between the detailing team, project management, fabrication, and erectors. The ideal candidate will oversee the flow of detailing information, coordinate drawing approvals, and ensure alignment between design documents and shop fabrication requirements.
Essential Job Functions:
Manage and coordinate the work of external detailing subcontractors to ensure high-quality shop and erection drawings are delivered on schedule. Manage the detailing budget for assigned projects, including tracking hours and costs, and identifying potential savings opportunities. Verify that all detail drawings conform to applicable industry codes, contract drawings, and project specifications. Oversee all aspects of the detailing process for assigned projects, including drawing production, checking, electronic file management, and bolt lists. Monitor drawing schedules proactively, anticipate potential delays or issues, and promptly communicate concerns to the Engineering manager, Project Manager, and other stakeholders. Identify and resolve detailing-related issues or recommend solutions, especially when fabrication nonconformance's arise; escalate to the Engineering Manager as needed. Maintain organized and up-to-date project files documenting all drawing submissions, approvals, revisions, RFI's, and fabrication packages. Review and validate change order requests from external detailing subcontractors for accuracy and completeness.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent ability to coordinate the work of outside detailers on multiple projects at the same time. Excellent skills in leading or working as a member of a team. Excellent knowledge of AISC and AWS codes, shop fabrication and steel erection methods and processes, and general construction practices. Excellent knowledge and skill in the use of detailing software and good skills in using word processing, spreadsheet and email software. Superior skill and ability to communicate, document and resolve problems and questions in a clear and timely manner. Superior knowledge and skill to develop and maintain drawing schedules and hold teams accountable to meet schedules. Required Qualifications 2-5 years of experience in steel fabrication, detailing coordination, or construction engineering Familiarity with detailing/modeling platforms such as SDS2, Tekla, or AutoCAD Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings Proficiency with MS Office and document control tools (Bluebeam, Procore, ShareFile, etc.) Preferred Qualifications Associate or Bachelor's in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field Understanding of fabrication tolerances, field fit-up, and sequencing erection Ability to perform basic model navigation and markups within BIM software Experience coordinating with or reviewing work from third-party detailers
