About Our Company Laydon, is a family owned and operated excavating & paving company since 1944 providing Underground Construction and Utility Support Services throughout the state of Connecticut. Job Summary We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Project Engineer to join our team and drive the successful delivery of civil infrastructure projects. In this role, you will oversee project planning, coordination, and execution, ensuring all phases meet technical standards, safety regulations, and client expectations. Your expertise in construction management, design engineering, and project scheduling will be essential to facilitate seamless project flow from inception through completion. Responsibilities Assist the Director of Construction Management with assigned projects from contract award through construction, billing and final closeout. Maintain accurate project files, logs and action lists for RFIs, submittals, purchase orders, change orders, materials, correspondence, punch lists and closeout documents. Prepare draft RFIs, submittals, purchase orders, meeting minutes, change documentation, project correspondence and other records for review by the Director of Construction. Assist with project cost tracking, quantity accounting, production records, forecasts, payment requisitions, cost plus documentation and billing backup. Perform quantity takeoffs and assist the Director of Project Management and Chief Estimator with pricing, vendor and subcontractor solicitations, bid tabulations and selected estimates. Use AutoCAD to prepare or revise basic project sketches, exhibits, layouts, quantity plans and as built information under the direction of senior project personnel. Review plans and specifications, compare them with field conditions and promptly identify apparent conflicts, missing information or constructability concerns. Attend project and internal coordination meetings, prepare notes and action items and follow assigned items through completion. Assist with superintendent and field coordination by communicating schedules, approved submittals, material information, survey data and other project requirements. Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, surveyors, utilities and other project participants as needed. Obtain field measurements, photographs, delivery records and other documentation needed to support quantities, billing, change work and project records. Assist with material procurement, submittal status, certifications and delivery coordination to support the project schedule. Collect, review and route subcontractor documentation, including certified payrolls, insurance certificates, W-9 forms, compliance submissions and payment support. Assist with public agency and municipal compliance documentation, including CT DOT and City subcontractor approval requirements when applicable. Support Call Before You Dig ticket administration, project specific portals and contractor qualification systems as assigned. Assist with punch list completion and project closeout, including final quantities, certifications, as built updates and subcontractor documentation. Visit jobsites as required to observe progress, verify quantities and support coordination while complying with all Laydon and project safety requirements. Obey and support enforcement of company safety policies, project procedures, work rules and quality requirements. Promptly communicate issues, missed commitments and changed conditions to the Director of Construction Management. Perform other related duties as assigned. Experience & Education Zero (1) to three (3) years of relevant construction, engineering or project management experience required. Relevant internship, cooperative education or field experience will be considered. Seeking Candidates with a strong civil engineering and/or construction management foundation. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related field. Candidates with an associate degree, technical training or relevant construction project experience may be considered Professional Engineer (PE), or Licensed Surveyor (LS) designation preferred but not required. Skills & Qualifications Working proficiency in AutoCAD sufficient to revise basic drawings, prepare project exhibits and as builts, assist in house survey & design with full blown project plans. Ability to read civil plans and specifications and perform accurate quantity takeoffs and construction calculations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong organization, attention to detail and follow through. Analytical and problem-solving ability with a willingness to ask questions and learn. Ability to work effectively in both office and active jobsite environments. Valid driver's license required. Working Conditions The work environment includes both office and active construction jobsites. Physical demands may include sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, stooping, kneeling, bending, climbing, lifting, reaching, using standard office equipment and operating a motor vehicle. Regular travel to project locations is required. Required personal protective equipment must be worn while on jobsites.
