Job Description

Under general supervision, assists in the design and/or inspection of a variety of municipal engineering projects; and performs related duties as assigned. The following duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed. Assists in designing/drafting plans and specifications for public works projects for the City's capital improvement plan, ensuring compliance with City, County, State and Federal statutes, regulations, codes, and ordinances. Works with contractors to ensure projects are completed according to specifications, including resolving or referring problems and concerns of contractors. Assists in inspecting capital improvement projects, in progress and upon completion, including taking samples and performing standard tests to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable City, County, State and Federal codes and guidelines; maintains detailed records of inspection activities and findings; prepares reports documenting project progress/status. Utilizes computer aided equipment to create plats, plans, blueprints, graphics for legal notices and topographic maps. Maintains and utilizes technical engineering computer programs; maintains and updates a variety of engineering related records, including City water, sewer, storm sewer, and street drawings. Assists in responding to and resolving inquiries and complaints including requests from the public, the City Manager, and elected officials for information and interpretation. Reviews site plan and development applications for compliance with stormwater and civil engineering municipal code requirements. Assists Code Enforcement with non-point source pollution, construction best management practices, and other Public Works related aspects requiring enforcement.
Managerial/technical/professional :
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, rules and ordinances related to municipal public works engineering operations. Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. Knowledge of a variety of computer hardware and software associated with engineering design and engineering project management. Ability to plan, design, and review a variety of public works oriented engineering projects.
Problem Solving :
Skill in analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions, and implementing recommendations in support of goals. Ability to interpret oral, written, technical information and data dealing with complex variables to identify, analyze and solve engineering problems.
Communication :
Skill in applying appropriate public relations techniques as situations warrant and in forming cooperative relationships with others whom do not have a direct reporting relationship. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, department directors, regulatory agencies, employees, contractors, and the general public.
OTHER JOB CHARACTERISTICS
May work extended hours including nights and weekends reporting to the City Engineer or their designee.
Education/Experience :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and two (2) years engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses/Certification :
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. Has obtained the status of Engineering Intern through the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.
