Job Description
Job Title:
Construction Engineer Job Description This role provides on-site oversight and management of transportation and infrastructure construction projects, with a strong focus on IDOT and Tollway work. You will ensure projects comply with engineering plans, specifications, schedules, and budgets while maintaining strict safety and regulatory standards. The position offers the opportunity to work on projects that directly impact local communities, collaborate closely with diverse stakeholders, and grow your career in a progressive, supportive, and inclusive environment. Responsibilities Provide on-site oversight and management of construction projects, ensuring work aligns with approved engineering plans and specifications. Monitor project progress to ensure adherence to schedules, budgets, and quality standards, and proactively address issues as they arise. Conduct field inspections of roadway, bridge, and related infrastructure construction to verify compliance with contract documents and regulatory requirements. Review and interpret civil engineering plans, specifications, and IDOT/Tollway documentation to guide construction activities and resolve field questions. Ensure strict adherence to safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements on all project sites. Prepare detailed field reports, inspection logs, and daily documentation that accurately capture work performed and project status. Support and maintain thorough project documentation, including record-keeping, compliance tracking, and contract quantity documentation. Coordinate effectively with contractors, clients, and project stakeholders to facilitate smooth project execution and resolve conflicts. Communicate clearly and professionally with county and Department of Transportation (DOT) clients, including IDOT and Tollway representatives. Utilize IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities practices to accurately track and report quantities for roadway and bridge projects. Collaborate with the construction engineering team, including resident engineers and inspectors, to ensure consistent project delivery standards. Use Microsoft Office Suite and other tools to prepare reports, track progress, and support project documentation requirements. Support both field and office functions as needed, including inspection duties and documentation technician responsibilities, depending on project needs. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management. Minimum of 2 years of experience working on tollway or IDOT projects. Experience in civil engineering, construction inspection, and construction management, particularly on roadway and bridge projects. Familiarity with IDOT and Tollway requirements, including IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities. Strong skills in project documentation, record-keeping, and compliance tracking. Ability to review and interpret engineering plans and specifications for transportation infrastructure. Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and work independently when needed. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting, documentation, and communication. Valid U.S. driver's license. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on IDOT, Tollway, CDOT, or county transportation projects. Experience with both field inspection and office-based documentation for construction projects. IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification or equivalent experience with IDOT documentation standards. Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with contractors, DOT clients, and project stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced project environment. Interest in continuous learning, professional development, and working on complex infrastructure projects. Motivation to contribute to a progressive, inclusive, and growth-oriented construction engineering team. Work Environment You will work primarily on IDOT and Tollway projects, with approximately 90% of assignments focused on IDOT-related work and potential future involvement in CDOT and county projects. The role initially requires working a night shift for approximately the first four months, typically from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00-5:00 a.m., after which you will transition to a day shift. You may choose a focus on field inspection, office-based documentation, or a hybrid arrangement that allows you to split time between office and field (approximately 50% in the office) depending on project needs and your preferences. Each major project has its own field office, and you will generally work from these field offices rather than a central corporate office. You will collaborate with a construction engineering team that includes resident engineers and a group of inspectors, typically with 3-4 representatives from the company on each project and multiple concurrent bridge projects. The environment emphasizes collaboration, personal leadership, and career growth, with access to tools and resources that support continuous learning and development. The organization values individuals who challenge the norm, deliver high-quality solutions, and bring diverse perspectives to the team.
