Job Description
Job Title:
Civil Engineer Job Description This role is an excellent opportunity for a civil or environmental engineering graduate with 0-3 years of experience who wants to build a professional engineering career in water resources and sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure. You will join a project team that helps communities and industries solve complex infrastructure challenges, including water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems. The team-based culture strongly supports learning, mentorship, and professional growth, especially for entry-level engineers. Responsibilities Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to complete assigned engineering tasks on water, wastewater, stormwater, and related infrastructure projects. Work under the supervision and guidance of a project manager or PE-level team member while progressively taking on more responsibility. Perform field work and site visits to support data collection, inspections, and construction observation for civil infrastructure projects. Conduct inspections of water, wastewater, stormwater, and transportation infrastructure to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. Prepare and contribute to engineering reports, technical memoranda, and project documentation for municipal infrastructure projects. Assist with permit preparation and coordination, including compiling supporting documentation and submitting applications to regulatory agencies. Support construction engineering activities, including reviewing contractor submittals, tracking progress, and documenting field conditions. Perform basic and intermediate design calculations for civil engineering projects, such as grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility layouts. Coordinate with contractors during design and construction to clarify plans, resolve issues, and support successful project delivery. Review construction drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements. Contact and coordinate with government officials and permitting authorities to obtain necessary permits and approvals. Collaborate with project teams on the design of water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and related facilities and pipe networks for municipal clients. Contribute to rehabilitation and new construction projects for water systems, wastewater systems, and transportation infrastructure across various cities and towns. Assist with stormwater engineering tasks, including drainage analysis and stormwater management design. Interact with clients as part of project teams, helping to communicate technical information and project status. Work closely with an assigned mentor to develop technical skills, project management capabilities, and professional judgment. Participate in regular performance evaluations and use feedback to support continuous professional development. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental and Ecological Engineering (or closely related civil/environmental discipline). 0-3 years of civil engineering experience in one or more of the following areas: water/wastewater, transportation, site development, or stormwater/drainage. Interest in and commitment to a career focused on water resources and sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure. Graduate degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline is a plus. Passed FE (Engineer-in-Training) exam is preferred and may support a higher entry-level classification. Work Environment The work environment combines a laid-back, friendly office atmosphere with periods that can be deadline-intensive, reflecting the demands of project schedules. The culture emphasizes a strong team environment, a family feel, and close collaboration among engineers at all levels. Engineers enjoy a mix of office-based design work and field work, providing a balanced start to a career in civil engineering. Standard office hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to start as early as 7:00 a.m. and leave earlier, or start as late as 9:00 a.m. and stay later, depending on project needs. At times, overtime may be required to meet project deadlines. In some periods, engineers may work a schedule of nine hours Monday through Thursday and four hours on Friday, allowing an early Friday departure. The firm focuses on municipal projects across Indiana, including water and wastewater treatment facilities, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, stormwater systems, and transportation projects, using tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design software. The environment supports mentoring, learning, and professional growth, with frequent performance evaluations and structured opportunities for advancement. Dress is business casual.
