A Building Engineer utilizes a mixture of construction knowledge and engineering principles to aid with building projects. Analyzes reports, helps design structures, and manages contracts and budgets. Also creates construction schedules and keeps construction sites in compliance with applicable laws.
CFAI operates mission-critical data center and network facilities supporting commercial customers, high-density colocation, cloud infrastructure, and AI computing environments. We are seeking a Grade 1 Building Engineer to join our facilities operations team and help maintain the electrical, mechanical, life-safety, and building systems that support continuous data center operations. Position Summary The Grade 1 Building Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of building systems within a mission-critical data center environment. This role requires hands-on experience with commercial building infrastructure, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to respond quickly and professionally to facility issues. The ideal candidate has experience working with electrical systems, HVAC equipment, generators, UPS systems, fire/life-safety systems, pumps, motors, controls, and general building maintenance. Data center experience is preferred, but strong commercial, industrial, hospital, manufacturing, or critical-facility experience will also be considered. Key Responsibilities Operate, monitor, inspect, and maintain building and data center infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical distribution, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, pumps, motors, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, exhaust systems, controls, and related equipment. Perform routine rounds and inspections of mechanical, electrical, and building systems. Respond to alarms, abnormal conditions, equipment failures, and customer-impacting issues. Assist with preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and emergency repairs. Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and control-system issues. Support vendors and contractors performing work inside the facility. Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with company procedures. Maintain accurate records of inspections, readings, maintenance activities, repairs, and incidents. Assist with startup, shutdown, and testing of building systems. Monitor temperatures, humidity, power conditions, and other facility operating parameters. Support data center uptime requirements by identifying potential issues before they become service-impacting. Maintain cleanliness, order, and safe working conditions in mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, loading areas, rooftops, common areas, and white space. Assist with customer-related support work as needed, including escorts, access coordination, and facility-related service requests. Participate in after-hours work, on-call rotation, emergency response, and scheduled maintenance windows as required. Required Qualifications Grade 1 Stationary Engineer license or equivalent building engineer qualification, where applicable. Experience operating and maintaining commercial, industrial, or mission-critical building systems. Working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical distribution, generators, UPS systems, pumps, motors, controls, and general building maintenance. Ability to read gauges, meters, control panels, alarms, drawings, equipment labels, and maintenance documentation. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during facility incidents. Comfortable working around electrical and mechanical equipment. Ability to communicate clearly with management, customers, vendors, contractors, and other team members. Ability to document work accurately and follow written procedures. Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work in a 24/7 mission-critical environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a data center, telecom facility, hospital, central plant, manufacturing facility, or other critical environment. Experience with
systems. Knowledge of lockout/tagout, electrical safety, confined space, hot work, and other safety procedures. Basic knowledge of fire alarm, fire suppression, and life-safety systems. Ability to review basic electrical and mechanical drawings. EPA certification, electrical license, HVAC certification, or additional trade certifications are a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials as required. Ability to climb ladders, work on rooftops, access mechanical spaces, and stand or walk for extended periods. Ability to work in mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, outdoor areas, and data center environments. Ability to respond quickly to alarms and urgent facility conditions. Schedule This position may require shift work, nights, weekends, holidays, emergency response, scheduled maintenance windows, and participation in an on-call rotation. Exact schedule will be determined based on facility needs. Compensation Compensation will be based on experience, licensing, qualifications, and shift requirements.
