Job Description

Civil Engineer Utilities & ConstructionPosition OverviewWe are seeking a Civil Engineer to focus on engineering projects focused planning, design and overseeing construction and maintenance of structures and facilities. The role will include permitting, and asset support to ensure reliable, safe and code-compliant utility facilities. The ideal candidate combines strong civil engineering fundamentals with practical utility and construction experience and works collaboratively with operations, electrical engineering and maintenance teams.

Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare and review civil engineering designs, calculations, drawings and specifications for utility infrastructure projects including foundations, roads, drainage, grading and site work.

Develop construction documents, bid packages and contract specifications; support procurement and contractor selection.

Provide construction management and on-site inspection to ensure work is performed to drawings, specifications, budget and schedule; document progress and change orders.

Coordinate with electrical, transmission, distribution and power plant teams to integrate civil requirements with electrical systems and operations.

Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards including NFPA, NESC and local building and permitting requirements; coordinate permitting and agency approvals.

Perform structural assessments, site evaluations and feasibility studies for new and existing facilities; recommend repairs, upgrades and maintenance strategies for facilities and assets.

Prepare cost estimates, schedules, technical reports and as-built documentation; support project budgeting and forecasting.

Support operations, maintenance and facilities teams with design modifications, emergency repairs and long-term asset management planning.

Mentor junior engineers and EITs, participate in technical reviews, and enforce QA/QC processes on deliverables.

Assist in safety planning for construction activities and ensure contractor compliance with safety and environmental requirements.

QualificationsBachelors degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; 3+ years of professional experience in civil engineering for utilities or heavy construction preferred.

Demonstrated experience with utility projects, construction management and civil engineering design (required: Utility, Construction, Civil Engineering).Familiarity with electrical distribution, transmission, power plant site work and related civil requirements (Distribution, Transmission, Power Plant, Electrical).Knowledge of industry codes and standards, particularly NFPA and NESC, and experience obtaining permits and agency approvals.

EIT certification required or in progress; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain PE licensure.

Proven ability to coordinate with operations, maintenance and facilities groups and to support long-term asset management activities.

Proficiency with civil design and drafting tools (AutoCAD, Civil 3D or equivalent), Microsoft Office and engineering calculation tools.

Strong technical writing, communication and project management skills; experience preparing specifications, cost estimates and construction schedules.

Willingness to perform site visits and construction oversight; valid drivers license and ability to work in the field.

Nice to have: direct experience with Operations, Maintenance, Facilities, Professional Engineer designation, NFPA/NESC application in utility environments.
