Job Description

Senior Geotechnical EngineerPosition OverviewThe Senior Geotechnical Engineer will perform geotechnical and civil engineering services under the supervision of the Division Director of Engineering. The position may also provide field engineering and consulting services in coordination with the Construction Services Department.

Key ResponsibilitiesGeotechnical Exploration Planning & BudgetingReview project drawings, specifications, geologic conditions, and available subsurface information.

Develop scopes of work for subsurface exploration, laboratory testing, and engineering services.

Prepare subsurface exploration, laboratory, and engineering quotations.

Prepare quotation documents, qualification packages, and other engineering and marketing materials.

Geotechnical Engineering Analysis & DesignReview and visually classify soil boring samples.

Review and interpret field boring logs and laboratory data.

Characterize soil properties, including strength and compressibility.

Perform shallow foundation design, including immediate and total settlement predictions.

Perform deep foundation design, including lateral loading analysis and deflection predictions.

Design flexible and rigid pavement systems.

Perform retaining wall analysis and design.

Perform slope stability analysis and design.

Evaluate and characterize sites with respect to seismic activity.

Geo-Structural EngineeringPerform analysis and design of:

Excavation bracing and shoring systems.

Earth-retaining structures.

Shoreline stabilization and protection structures, including bulkheads and walls.

Underpinning systems.

Field EngineeringPerform field testing using appropriate equipment and instrumentation.

Evaluate shallow foundation subgrade conditions.

Characterize OSHA soil types for temporary excavations.

Evaluate pavement and structural subgrades.

Provide soil stabilization consultations.

Perform construction materials sampling and evaluations.

Prepare field engineering reports.

Business DevelopmentPrepare project case histories and other marketing materials.

Participate in professional and trade organizations.

Present geotechnical engineering topics to clients and professional/trade organizations.

Participate in client development activities as needed.

Education & ExperienceBachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

Master's degree with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.

Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

Minimum of 10 years of related geotechnical and/or civil engineering experience preferred.

Desired Skills & AttributesStrong technical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Ability and desire to develop into a leadership role within the Toledo office and the broader organization.

Flexibility and willingness to adjust work schedules as needed to meet project deadlines.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Willingness to travel as required for projects, with most travel expected to be within 90 miles of the assigned office.

Willingness to participate in client development activities outside of regular business hours.

Reporting RelationshipsThe Senior Geotechnical Engineer will report to and work closely with:

Toledo Operations ManagerDirector of Engineering and Environmental Services DivisionOther company managers, as requiredPhysical RequirementsPhysical AbilitiesThe employee must be able to:

Stand, walk, push, pull, twist, and reach overhead.

Bend, crawl, and climb.

Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Visual RequirementsAbility to read instructions and other materials necessary to perform job functions.

Hearing RequirementsAbility to monitor sounds for changes in machine function.

Work EnvironmentThe position may involve exposure to:

Traffic hazards.

Construction-site hazards, including moving heavy equipment.

Inclement weather conditions.

High noise levels.

CompensationCompensation will be competitive and commensurate with current market rates, qualifications, and experience.
