Job Title:
BESS Project Engineer (Level 2) Job Description The Utility Scale Energy Storage team is seeking a Project Engineer with a passion for renewable energy and experience in energy storage. This role involves planning, designing, and managing energy storage projects, selecting equipment, coordinating engineering resources, supporting logistics and construction, and consulting across teams. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise, strong project management skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. You will analyze data, conduct technical due diligence, propose storage solutions, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maximize battery energy storage system performance. Responsibilities Support the design phase and engineer major components for large-scale energy storage projects. Recognize inconsistencies in engineering drawings, take corrective action, and strive for better design quality and efficiency. Identify and resolve errors in engineering studies and suggest future solutions. Prepare technical scopes of work for contracts. Support projects from inception to completion by working closely with project managers. Influence project teams on engineering tasks. Stay updated on project progress and technical issues. Manage project milestones and recognize risks. Collaborate with suppliers to integrate major equipment. Work with diverse teams to solve problems, improve opportunities, and integrate systems and controls. Understand specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear communication, and propose solutions. Understand permitting requirements, propose solutions to legal challenges, and recommend site design improvements. Handle other assigned duties as needed. Travel 25% of the time for project-specific duties. Essential Skills SME in substation or utility scale energy storage design and/or project management. Expertise in power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, generation tie design, or data centers. Design and/or operation of large-scale power generation or processing plants. Hands-on experience or strong knowledge of construction methods, including foundations, trenching, electrical terminations and testing, and best safety practices. Strong knowledge of technologies in energy storage including varying battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC-DC converters. Familiarity with lithium-ion battery storage safety standards such asUL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA
70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections. Familiarity with interconnection studies and GIA material modification adjustment (MMA) processes, particularly in WECC and CAISO. Experience in construction permitting and contracting. Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program. 5+ years of proven engineering experience. Additional Skills & Qualifications Maturity of technical expertise and responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively conveying technical and non-technical concepts to diverse audiences. Work Environment The position is remote with 25% travel required for project-specific duties. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Juno Beach, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $50.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
