Job Title:
Project Engineer Job Description The Project Engineer will lead technology and integration projects for fulfillment and distribution center operations, ensuring that complex automation and material-handling solutions are delivered on time, within scope, and in line with project goals. This role collaborates closely with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners, and relies on a strong understanding of design approaches and industry technologies used in automated industrial environments. Responsibilities Lead and manage technology and integration projects from initiation through commissioning, ensuring successful delivery of automation solutions that meet defined project goals. Coordinate and oversee the design, installation, and commissioning of engineering equipment and material-handling systems in fulfillment and distribution centers. Work directly with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners to define requirements, align on technical solutions, and resolve issues throughout the project lifecycle. Apply solid knowledge of fulfillment and distribution center design approaches and industry technologies to develop effective, scalable automation solutions. Manage project engineering activities, including planning, scheduling, and tracking progress to ensure milestones and deadlines are met. Oversee construction management aspects related to equipment installation and integration, ensuring that work follows design specifications and safety standards. Provide technical leadership on large-scale industrial engineering projects, guiding cross-functional teams and stakeholders through design and implementation phases. Develop and review integrated automation layouts using CAD tools, ensuring that designs are accurate, efficient, and feasible for installation. Manage and be accountable for cumulative automation project budgets ranging from 0.5 million to 50 million, ensuring cost control and financial transparency. Support throughput qualification (TQ) or similar performance qualification efforts to validate that systems achieve required throughput and performance targets. Use Microsoft Excel, Project, and Outlook to manage schedules, track deliverables, report status, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders. Travel frequently to installation sites to oversee on-site activities, support equipment installation and commissioning, and address technical and operational issues. Document project plans, design changes, and implementation details to support knowledge transfer, maintenance, and continuous improvement. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or a related field. 4+ years of experience as a project engineer, process engineer, project manager, manufacturing engineer, or in a closely related role. Proven experience directly managing and being responsible for cumulative automation project budgets from 0.5 million to 50 million. Demonstrated technical leadership on large-scale industrial engineering projects. Hands-on design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions, including complex material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, and manufacturing lines. Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, execute, and deliver complex engineering projects. Experience with vendor management, including coordination with external equipment vendors and partners. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Project, and Outlook. High proficiency in CAD tools, with the ability to independently develop integrated automation layouts. Ability to travel extensively, up to 75-90% of the time, to installation sites across North America and the United States. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with throughput qualification (TQ) or similar performance and throughput validation in automated systems. Background in engineering equipment installation and commissioning in industrial or distribution environments. Experience in construction management related to automation and material-handling equipment installation. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address technical challenges in complex automation projects. Effective communication skills for working with customers, vendors, and cross-functional project teams. Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining alignment with broader project objectives and timelines. Work Environment This role is highly travel-focused, with the ability and willingness to be on the road up to 75-90% of the time. Most team members typically fly to an installation site on Monday morning, work on-site throughout the week, and return home on Friday afternoon. In some cases, individuals may choose to stay over a weekend, though this is rare. Work takes place primarily at fulfillment and distribution center installation sites across North America and the United States, where complex automation, material-handling equipment, and integrated industrial systems are being installed and commissioned. The environment is dynamic and hands-on, involving close collaboration with vendors, contractors, and on-site operations teams, and requires comfort working in active industrial and construction settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Cincinnati, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $65.00/hr.
