Job Description

Structural Project Engineer - Residential Design Job Summary The Structural Project Engineer is responsible for the analysis, design, and evaluation of residential structures, including custom homes, multi-family developments, additions, renovations, and structural repairs. This role supports projects from initial concept through construction by preparing structural calculations, construction documents, field evaluations, and construction administration services. The ideal candidate is passionate about residential design, understands wood-frame construction, and can provide practical, cost-effective structural solutions while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes. Key Responsibilities Structural Design & Engineering Design and analyze residential structural systems, including foundations, floor framing, wall systems, roof framing, beams, columns, and lateral force-resisting systems. Prepare structural calculations, details, and construction documents for custom homes, additions, remodels, accessory structures, and multi-family residential developments. Design structural solutions for open floor plans, large window openings, vaulted ceilings, decks, porches, and specialty architectural features. Evaluate existing residential structures and develop repair, reinforcement, and renovation recommendations. Perform structural assessments related to foundation settlement, framing deficiencies, water damage, and other structural concerns. Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, local regulations, and accepted engineering practices. Project Coordination Collaborate with homeowners, architects, builders, contractors, and permitting agencies throughout the project lifecycle. Assist in the development and completion of permit and construction documents. Coordinate structural designs with architectural layouts and project requirements. Participate in project meetings and communicate design recommendations clearly and effectively. Manage multiple residential projects while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget expectations. Construction Administration & Field Services Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and contractor questions during construction. Review shop drawings, product submittals, and delegated design elements for compliance with project requirements. Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress. Document field observations and provide recommendations for corrective actions when necessary. Support builders and homeowners with practical solutions to field-related structural issues. Professional Skills Strong commitment to client service and project responsiveness. Ability to explain structural concepts clearly to homeowners, contractors, and non-technical stakeholders. Practical and solution-oriented approach to residential design challenges. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate construction documents. Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and sound engineering judgment. Requirements & Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis. 3-6 years of structural engineering experience, preferably in residential or light commercial construction. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure preferred. Technical Knowledge & Skills Strong understanding of residential structural systems and wood-frame construction. Experience designing foundations, floor systems, roof framing, engineered wood products, and structural connections. Familiarity with residential building codes and design standards, including
IRC, IBC, ASCE 7, AWC
NDS, and applicable local codes. Proficiency with structural engineering software such as RISA Suite, ENERCALC, and Microsoft Excel. Ability to perform structural evaluations of existing homes and develop practical repair solutions. Knowledge of residential construction methods, permitting processes, and field practices. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Strong proficiency in Revit design & modeling Career Growth Expectations Lead residential projects from concept through construction completion. Develop long-term relationships with homeowners, builders, architects, and developers. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of residential engineering standards and practices. Support business development efforts and help expand the company's residential engineering services.
