Job Title:
Sr Project Engineer Job Description The Sr Project Engineer provides comprehensive project controls support across planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, and change management for a variety of programs and projects. This role develops, maintains, and updates project schedules and budgets, prepares financial and performance reports, and supports project leadership in managing risks, tracking progress, and driving successful project delivery. The position requires strong engineering experience, advanced project controls skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Provide project controls support to program and project leadership in the areas of planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, and change management across multiple programs and projects. Assist in the development of detailed project schedules, including defining activities, sequencing tasks, and establishing realistic timelines and resource allocations. Maintain and regularly update project schedules to reflect actual progress, scope changes, and performance updates collected from project teams and stakeholders. Track and monitor project budgets, expenses, and financial forecasts for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with approved funding and cost baselines. Prepare cost reports and financial analyses that clearly communicate current performance, variances, trends, and forecasted outcomes to project leadership. Help identify project risks, issues, and opportunities, and support the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies. Maintain and update project risk registers, ensuring timely documentation of new risks, status changes, and mitigation actions. Create and distribute project status reports and performance dashboards that summarize schedule, cost, risk, and key performance indicators for leadership review. Support the development, tracking, and reporting of project metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure progress, performance, and adherence to project objectives. Document and capture the project plan as developed by program and project leadership, ensuring that scope, schedule, cost, and risk elements are clearly defined and controlled. Execute the core tasks and responsibilities of the role with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound judgment and ownership of assigned work. Perform detailed quantity surveys based on assigned projects, including using on-screen takeoff tools to derive quantities from engineering and construction documents. Write basis of estimate documents that clearly explain the assumptions, methodologies, and data sources used in project cost estimates. Apply industry-recognized best practices in at least one of the following areas: planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, or change management and trends. Maintain a professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication, both written and verbal. Perform other related duties as assigned by leadership to support successful project execution and continuous improvement of project controls processes. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in engineering. Typically 7 or more years of experience in engineering, project management, or related industry roles. Experience utilizing industry-known best practices in at least one of the following areas: planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, or change management and trends. Experience using project management software applications for scheduling, tracking, and reporting. Basic understanding of engineering documents and the ability to derive quantities from drawings and specifications. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Ability to execute core tasks and responsibilities with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong organizational and time-management skills. Strong analytical skills for developing schedules, tracking costs, and performing financial and performance analyses. Clear and professional communication skills for preparing reports, dashboards, and basis of estimate documents, and for interacting with project leadership and team members. Knowledge of several construction and project disciplines sufficient to understand scope, methods, and sequencing of work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Advanced software skills using on-screen takeoff and estimating tools. Experience performing detailed quantity surveys using on-screen takeoff tools. Experience writing basis of estimate documents for project cost estimates. Broad knowledge across multiple construction and project disciplines, enabling effective coordination and risk identification. Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects or programs simultaneously in a project controls capacity. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in schedules, cost reports, risk registers, and project documentation. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional project teams and leadership. Proactive approach to identifying risks, trends, and improvement opportunities within project controls processes. Work Environment This role operates in an on-site office environment, working closely with project leadership and multidisciplinary project teams. The position involves extensive use of project management software, Microsoft Office applications, and specialized on-screen takeoff and estimating tools to develop schedules, perform quantity takeoffs, and prepare cost and performance reports. Work is primarily computer-based and desk-oriented, with regular interaction through meetings, calls, and written communication. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Oak Ridge, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $80.00/hr.
