Mott MacDonald is a leading provider of engineering, advisory, program management, and technical consulting services supporting electric utilities and energy infrastructure clients throughout North America. Mott MacDonald is seeking a licensed Project Engineer to support the delivery of civil and structural services supporting transmission line, substation, and energy infrastructure projects throughout the Southwest and North America. This role is ideally suited for a Professional Engineer with 7+ years of experience delivering civil and structural engineering solutions for electric utility and energy infrastructure clients. The successful candidate will lead engineering tasks and work packages, coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, support direct client interactions, and contribute to the delivery of critical infrastructure that improves grid reliability, system resiliency, renewable integration, and load growth. The ideal candidate combines strong technical engineering skills with practical project delivery experience and a desire to grow into increasingly complex technical leadership and client-facing responsibilities. Your Impact As a Project Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for the civil and structural components of transmission and substation projects that support utility infrastructure modernization across North America. You will work closely with project managers, engineers, geotechnical specialists, survey and GIS professionals, protection and controls engineers, and utility clients to develop engineering solutions. Success in this role will be measured through: Successful delivery of civil and structural work packages Technical quality and delivery performance Client satisfaction Development of junior technical staff Contribution to project pursuits and business growth Key Responsibilities Civil & Structural Engineering Delivery Develop and review: Engineering calculations Technical reports Design criteria Specifications Construction drawings Quantity estimates Technical memoranda Ensure engineering deliverables meet client requirements, industry standards, and Mott MacDonald quality expectations. Civil Engineering Design Support and lead engineering services including: Site grading and drainage design Stormwater management Erosion and sediment control Access road design Site development planning Utility coordination Earthwork evaluation Constructability reviews Coordinate with survey, GIS, environmental, and geotechnical teams to support successful project execution. Structural Engineering Design Lead design and analysis of: Transmission pole and tower foundations Equipment foundations Transformer foundations Control building foundations Structural steel support systems Retaining structures Reinforced concrete structures Drilled shafts and deep foundations Spread footings and mat foundations Client Satisfaction Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and project reviews. Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, constructability reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings. Support project managers with scope development, resource planning, schedule coordination, and project execution activities. Work closely with clients, contractors, and construction teams to address field conditions and maintain project delivery objectives. Development of junior technical staff Support and mentor junior engineers and designers Participate in technical reviews and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Contribute to the development of standards, best practices, and tools that improve engineering quality and delivery efficiency. Promote a culture of safety, technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Contribution to project pursuits and business growth Contribute to proposals, technical approaches, and business development initiatives. Help identify opportunities to expand Mott MacDonald's services with existing utility and energy clients. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline. Professional Engineer (PE) license required with ability to serve clients throughout the Southwest. 7+ years of experience delivering civil and structural engineering projects within the electric utility, transmission, distribution, substation, or energy sectors. Experience with transmission line foundations, substation foundations, equipment support structures, steel structures, and related utility infrastructure. Strong understanding of site development, grading, drainage, foundation design, structural steel, and reinforced concrete design. Proficiency with engineering and design software including AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Civil 3D, STAAD Pro, RISA, SAP2000, or similar platforms. Experience reviewing geotechnical reports and incorporating foundation recommendations into project designs. Preferred Qualifications Working knowledge of industry standards and design codes, including
ASCE 7, AISC, ACI
318, NESC, and applicable utility design criteria. Experience with utility industry applications such as PLS-CADD, CDEGS, CymCAP, ETAP, and Bentley OpenUtilities is highly desirable. Experience mentoring junior staff and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams. Strong communication, project leadership, and stakeholder management skills. Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills. The expected salary for this position is $116,000 - $142,000.
