Job Description

Start in the Field. Build a Career. At Hodge Western Corp, we believe the best project managers and superintendents are made in the field — not in a classroom or a conference room. That's why we're looking for driven, early-career professionals who want to get their hands dirty, learn the craft of complex underground utility construction, and grow into leaders who run projects and crews at scale. This isn't a desk job. It's a launch pad. Who We Are Hodge Western Corp has spent 20 years pushing the boundaries of specialty underground utility construction. We operate across three divisions — Renewables, Rock Trenching, and Directional Drilling — and build some of the most technically demanding utility infrastructure across the United States. Our technology-driven approach to construction gives our clients real advantages in safety and efficiency, and it gives our people real advantages in career development. The Role As a Field Engineer, you'll be embedded in active project sites alongside experienced Superintendents and Project Managers, building the technical and operational foundation you'll need to eventually lead projects or crews on your own. You'll own quality control, GPS layout, as-built documentation, and field coordination — the core skills that separate great builders from average ones. This role is intentionally designed as a development position. High performers will be given increasing responsibility and a clear choice: grow toward Project Management (cost control, client relationships, project execution) or Field Supervision (crew leadership, production, and boots-on-the-ground operations). What You'll Do Field Engineering & Construction Support Work side-by-side with Superintendents and PMs to support daily field operations on large-scale renewable energy and heavy civil projects Interpret construction plans, specs, and drawings — and make sure the work in the ground matches what's on paper Perform layout and verification using GPS and conventional survey methods Quality Control Lead QC processes in the field to ensure all work meets project specifications and contract requirements Conduct inspections of installed work and maintain detailed documentation: inspection reports, test results, and daily quality logs Identify deficiencies, communicate them clearly, and track corrective actions through to completion Topcon GPS & As-Built Data Operate Topcon GPS equipment for layout verification and field data collection Collect, process, and maintain accurate as-built records throughout the project lifecycle Keep as-built documentation organized, complete, and aligned with project requirements Project Documentation & Coordination Manage field documentation including drawings, RFIs, submittals, and change orders Track quantities installed and assist with progress reporting Coordinate with project teams and owner representatives to keep communication tight What We're Looking For 1-2 years of experience in construction, field engineering, or quality control — heavy civil, underground utilities, or renewable energy preferred Ability and willingness to travel full-time to project sites across the U.S. Familiarity with MS Office Suite; experience with Bluebeam or MS Project is a plus Strong attention to detail, especially when it comes to documentation and QC tracking Clear communicator — you can work with a field crew in the morning and a client representative in the afternoon A construction-related degree (Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar) is preferred but not required — we value demonstrated field aptitude and work ethic Your Path Forward We're not hiring someone to stay a Field Engineer forever. We're hiring someone who wants to prove themselves in the field and earn a seat at the table — either as: Project Manager — Own project execution, manage client relationships, drive cost and schedule performance Superintendent — Lead field crews, drive production, and be the person who makes things happen on the ground The path you choose is up to you. The opportunity to get there is yours to earn. Compensation & Benefits
Annual Salary:
$75,000 - $105,000 based on experience
Medical Insurance:
100% company-paid for you and your family
PTO:
Four weeks annually + 40 hours sick time 401(k) with employer match Performance-based bonus potential
