This position works within the Roads Construction Management group of Public Works to oversee heavy civil roads capital construction projects. You'll perform highly technical office and field assignments in roadway infrastructure construction and inspection, working independently and collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders. Your work will be reviewed periodically through reports, conferences, and meetings, but you'll have autonomy to make critical decisions that keep projects on track. The primary function of this position is to provide highly technical support for the Construction Manager and collaboration with the Construction Inspection Supervisor. Once you earn your PE license, you'll automatically advance to Assistant Construction Manager (Engineer 2) no reapplication required. Assistant Construction Manager:

Quality Assurance Leadership

• Oversee construction activities and inspection staff to ensure projects meet contract plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. Review daily reports, provide technical guidance, and resolve complex contractual issues. Contract Compliance
• Ensure full compliance from contract award through project closeout, applying professional judgment to challenging situations. Project Financial Management
• Independently manage construction budgets, review and approve contractor payments, and negotiate change orders. Project Coordination
• Lead staffing decisions, coordinate utilities, and conduct pre-construction and weekly progress meetings. Stakeholder Relations
• Serve as the primary contact for contractors, utility companies, regulatory agencies, and the public. Review and respond to RFIs with professional engineering judgment. Public Relations
• Partner with Public Outreach staff to communicate project impacts and respond to community questions with technical expertise. Bridge Inspection Oversight
• Support the inspection program for in-service bridges, including required reporting with assistance from the Capital Construction Inspector Supervisor. Staff Supervision
• Directly supervise and mentor project inspection staff.

What You Bring Minimum Qualifications for Engineer 1 (ONE of the following): Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field,OR Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification,OR Four years of related engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) If qualifying through experience: Complete a verification form during the application process that includes verification of work performed under PE supervision, Professional Engineer signature, and PE stamp/seal or copy of current license Minimum Qualifications for Assistant Construction Manager (Engineer 2): Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (required to auto progress),OR Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related fieldANDfour years of related construction management/engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer,OR Engineer in Training (EIT) certification ANDfour years of related construction management/engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, AND Progressively responsible civil engineering experience demonstrating the ability to perform the full scope of Engineer 2 responsibilities

• Engineering means the "practice of engineering" as defined in

RCW 18.43.020. A CMAA

may substitute for a PE. Preferred Education, Experience or Other Qualifications Two years of construction Management experience. Certified as a Construction Manager from Construction Management Association of America.
