The Safety Engineer serves as the on-site safety lead for project execution and supports safe performance across construction, equipment installation, startup/commissioning, environmental compliance, and permitting-related activities. This individual is expected to maintain a strong daily field presence, identify and mitigate risk, reinforce contractor accountability, and support compliance with company requirements and applicable regulatory standards. This role works closely with the Project Manager, Construction Manager, contractors, engineering, maintenance, operations, and site EHS stakeholders to help ensure work is performed safely, responsibly, and efficiently. Key Responsibilities:
1) Construction Safety Oversight Serve as the owner's on-site safety representative during active field execution. Maintain daily visibility in construction and installation areas during contractor working hours. Conduct field observations, safety inspections, and risk reviews of contractor activities. Monitor compliance with site safety requirements, contractor safety plans, and applicable OSHA/WISHA
standards. Participate in pre-task planning, JHAs, high-risk work reviews, and daily coordination meetings. Identify unsafe conditions or behaviors, require timely correction, and escalate unresolved issues. Reinforce expectations related to housekeeping, fall protection, barricading, excavation safety, access/egress, mobile equipment interaction, and energy isolation. 2) Equipment Installation & Commissioning Safety Support safe installation, integration, testing, startup, and commissioning of project equipment. Review installation sequencing and work plans for safety risks during equipment setting and utility tie-ins. Support lockout/tagout readiness, temporary power safety, machine safeguarding, and startup hazard controls. Participate in commissioning readiness reviews, pre-energization checks, and pre-startup safety reviews, as applicable. Coordinate with engineering, maintenance, OEMs, integrators, and contractors during testing and turnover activities. 3) Environmental Compliance & Permitting Support Support compliance with site environmental requirements and project-related permits. Monitor field practices related to spill prevention, chemical handling, waste management, dust/debris control, and housekeeping. Help verify required permits, authorizations, and inspections are in place before work begins. Monitor work execution against permit conditions and approved methods. Coordinate with site EHS and project leadership on environmental concerns, incidents, or permit-related issues. 4) Contractor Safety Leadership & Reporting Participate in contractor onboarding, safety orientations, toolbox talks, and weekly safety meetings. Hold contractors accountable to site expectations and required safety performance. Support incident reporting, near miss follow-up, corrective action closure, and lessons learned. Maintain records of field observations, findings, and corrective actions. Provide routine updates to project leadership regarding safety concerns, trends, and required actions. Primary Qualifications:
Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred. OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety training required Professional safety certifications such as CHST, ASP, CSP, or similar are preferred Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience in construction safety, industrial project safety, or similar field-based roles Demonstrated experience supporting contractor-performed work on active construction sites. Experience with industrial equipment installation, startup, or commissioning is strongly preferred. Experience with environmental compliance and permit-related field activities is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:
Strong knowledge of construction safety practices and hazard recognition. Working knowledge of OSHA and Washington State construction safety requirements (WISHA / WA L&I). Ability to work independently in the field and make sound decisions in a dynamic project environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with contractors and site leadership. Ability to document findings clearly and drive corrective actions to closure. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard safety reporting/documentation tools. Working Conditions:
This is a field-based role in an active construction and industrial project environment. Frequent walking, standing, stair climbing, and exposure to weather, noise, dust, and typical construction conditions should be expected.
