The City of Newport's Engineering Department is offering an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals to get hands-on experience as an Engineering Intern. Whether you're a current college student or a recent high school graduate exploring career paths, this temporary, paid internship provides real-world exposure to municipal engineering, fieldwork, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and construction management. As an Engineering Intern, you'll work side-by-side with our engineering staff on real city projects - learning what it takes to design, build, and maintain the systems that keep Newport running.
What You May Do:
Use surveying equipment to assist with field data collection Map and document streets, curbs, storm drains, and utility lines Update GIS records and assist with electronic mapping Observe and support construction inspection and quality control Review engineering plans and project documentation Use computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools to help with project planning Assist with research, including property ownership and legal descriptions Participate in project meetings and interact with contractors Tackle other hands-on engineering-related tasks as assigned

We're looking for individuals who are: At least 18 years old Enrolled in or recently completed a program in civil engineering, engineering technology, or a related field OR high school students/graduates with a strong interest in engineering, construction, or public infrastructure Curious, detail-oriented, and willing to learn Familiar (or eager to learn) CAD and GIS software tools Strong communicators with a problem-solving mindset Physical Demands Work takes place in both office and outdoor settings Outdoor tasks may involve exposure to changing weather and construction zones Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally How to Apply All applications for this position must be submitted via our online application system at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofnewport Only complete applications will be considered and application review will continue until position is filled.
